Genomic lens on neuroglobin transcription

Cutrupi Santina · Ferrero Giulio · Reineri Stefania +2 more

Neuroglobin is a brain globin with neuroprotective effects against ischemia and related pathological processes, acting as O 2 sensor and antiapoptotic pathway transducer. Here, we survey data on neuroanatomical coexpression of transcription factors, epigenetic signature and predictive transcription factor binding sites at the neuroglobin gene locus to find hints of pathways to neuroglobin transcriptional regulation. These data provide a glimpse of how neuroglobin expression may translate into neuronal diversity and function, as well as disease. © 2014 IUBMB Life, 66(1):46–51, 2014.

An Online Alcohol and Oral Health Curriculum for Dental Students

Miller Peter M. · Ravenel Michele C. · Mauldin Mary P. +3 more

Regular heavy alcohol use can cause or worsen several oral health disorders and is associated with complications during and after dental procedures. Dental student education should provide detailed knowledge of these issues together with skills needed to detect and counsel patients with unhealthy drinking patterns. This project was designed to develop and evaluate a five–module, online program to teach dental students about alcohol and oral health, systemic and oral biological effects of heavy drinking, required changes to treatment protocols for heavy drinkers, reliable methods of alcohol screening, and ways to provide heavy drinkers with brief interventions. Results indicated that the online program resulted in significant changes in knowledge, attitudes, and behavior. This online format could easily be incorporated into an already crowded dental school curriculum, with students learning the material at their own pace and in their own available time.

Introducing CAD/CAM into a Predoctoral Dental Curriculum: A Case Study

Reifeis Paul E. · Kirkup Michele L. · Willis Lisa H. +1 more

This article describes the decision making and implementation process used at Indiana University School of Dentistry to incorporate a CAD/CAM system into the predoctoral curriculum and presents data regarding the opinions of students and faculty members after one year. Using a non‐validated survey instrument, D1 students rated their experience fabricating a CAD/CAM‐generated crown. Eighty‐eight of the 105 D1 students (84 percent response rate) responded to the four multiple‐choice questions, and a varying number provided written responses. Eighty percent of the responding students rated the overall learning experience as good or excellent, and 43 percent judged that they were prepared to fabricate a crown independently. Students’ comments about the experience were generally positive. The twelve supervising faculty members were also surveyed after the first year. When asked to evaluate the initial quality of the crowns at placement, they rated 89 to 98 percent of them good or excellent on the measures of marginal fit, axial contours, proximal contacts, and occlusal contacts. In their judgment, CAD/CAM‐generated crowns were as good as or better than those received from commercial labs. After one year, the school's experience has been that the performance of these crowns is consistent with the literature and that they are a viable option. Also, the students are enthusiastic about this addition to the curriculum.

Multiple Mini Interviews for Selection of Dental Students: Influence of Gender and Starting Station

Barbour Michele E. · Sandy Jonathan R.

Multiple Mini Interviews (MMI) are an increasingly popular tool for selecting entrants to undergraduate degree programs in dentistry in the United Kingdom. This article reports on the use of MMI to select dental students at the University of Bristol, United Kingdom, over two successive admissions cycles (2011–12 and 2012–13). MMI provided an efficient means to discriminate between the performance of applicants who were all academically highly qualified, with total scores ranging from 35 percent to 87 percent of the maximum possible score. Female candidates performed significantly better than male candidates when assessed by total score (p=0.011; mean score 94.4 for female applicants and 91.9 for male applicants) and by outcome (offer/decline; p=0.016; 58.6 percent of female and 46.4 percent of male interviewees received an offer of study following interview). There was no statistically significant effect of starting station on candidate performance (p=0.359), indicating that a candidate's overall chance of success in the MMI was not influenced by which station he or she experienced first. Stakeholder acceptance was good, with 75 percent of candidates and 95 percent of assessors preferring MMI over traditional interviews.

Antecedent interventions for pediatric feeding problems

Seubert Christine · Fryling Mitch J. · Wallace Michele D. +2 more

Behavior analysts have implemented and evaluated several antecedent strategies for treating pediatric feeding problems. The extent to which antecedent interventions are beneficial, however, is not yet clear. This review examines recent research in the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis (2000–2012) that evaluated antecedent interventions. We found that the feeding diagnosis (food refusal vs. food selectivity) and presence of feeding‐related medical conditions were related to the differential implementation of antecedent interventions.

TIME VARIATION IN THE DYNAMICS OF WORKER FLOWS: EVIDENCE FROM NORTH AMERICA AND EUROPE

Campolieti Michele · Gefang Deborah · Koop Gary

SUMMARY Vector autoregressive methods have been used to model the interrelationships between job vacancy rates, job separation rates and job‐finding rates using tools such as impulse response analysis. We investigate whether such impulse responses change across the business cycle or over time, by estimating time‐varying parameter–vector autoregressions for data from North America (the USA and Canada) and Europe (France, Spain and the UK). While the adjustment process of the labour market to shocks in Canada and the USA is similar, we find the adjustment process differs much more across the European countries, with greater persistence in shocks relative to the USA and Canada. Analysis of CD34+ cell collection using two mobilization regimens for newly diagnosed multiple myeloma patients reveals the separate impact of mobilization and collection variables

Abuabdou Ahmed · Rosenbaum Eric R. · Usmani Saad Zafar +2 more

Mobilization regimens for CD34+ cells have generally been judged successful based on the number of cells collected without evaluating mobilization separately from collection. Using retrospective data for patients who collected CD34+ cells on Total Therapy protocols 3a/3b (VTD‐PACE) and Total Therapy 4/5 using a novel regimen that added low dose melphalan to VTD‐PACE (MVTD‐PACE), we analyzed mobilization and collection variables separately. A significant difference favoring MVDT‐PACE was found in mean CD34+ cells/µL on day 2 of collection and in mean ratio of CD34+ cells/µL on day 2 to day 1. However, because apheresis variables and growth factor dose during collection were manipulated to optimize individual collections, the two regimens were not significantly different when the mean total CD34+ cells ×10 6 /kg collected was compared. Thus, when evaluating a chemotherapy regimen or new growth factor for mobilization, it is important to realize that total CD34+ cells collected is dependent on both mobilization and collection variables. Differential Activation of Signaling Pathways by Low‐Osmolar and Iso‐Osmolar Radiocontrast Agents in Human Renal Tubular Cells

Andreucci Michele · Faga Teresa · Russo Domenico +6 more

Radiocontrast media (RCM)‐induced nephrotoxicity (CIN) is a major clinical problem accounting for 12% of all hospital‐acquired cases of acute kidney injury (AKI). The pathophysiology of AKI due to RCM is not well understood, but direct toxic effects on renal cells have been postulated as contributing to CIN. It is believed that iso‐osmolar RCM (IOCM) are less nephrotoxic than low‐osmolar RCM (LOCM) but clinical data have been controversial. We have investigated the intracellular signaling pathways that may be affected by the LOCM iomeprol (IOM) and the IOCM iodixanol (IOD). Both IOM and IOD caused a dramatic decrease in phosphorylation of the kinase Akt at Ser473 and Thr308 in human renal tubular (HK‐2) cells, with IOM having a greater effect; IOM also caused a greater decrease in cell viability. IOM also had a greater effect on phosphorylation of p38 MAP kinases, JNKs, and NF‐kB (Ser276), and caused a marked decrease in the phosphorylation of forkhead box O3a (FOXO3a) and signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3). However, IOD caused a greater decrease in the phosphorylation of mTOR (Ser2448) and phospho‐ERK 1/2 while both RCM caused a similar decrease in the phosphorylation of phospho‐p70S6 kinase (Ser371). In vivo studies showed that both IOM and IOD caused a significant decrease in both pAkt (Ser473) and pERK 1/2 in rat kidneys. Our study gives an insight into the possible mechanism of toxicity of RCM via their action on intracellular signaling pathways and may help in developing pharmacological interventions for their side‐effects.
