Peripheral diagnostic and interventional procedures using an automated injection system for carbon dioxide (CO2): case series and learning curve.

Arturo Giordano · Stefano Messina · Michele Polimeno +4 more

The administration of iodinated contrast media in doses sufficient for diagnosis and procedural guidance, when coincident with renal insufficiency, presents a considerable risk of exacerbating and hastening renal failure. Carbon dioxide has been proposed in the past as an alternative, but only recently dedicated injection systems have become available. We aimed to review our ongoing experience with an automated carbon dioxide injector for peripheral diagnostic and interventional procedures.

Impact of different dosage of protamine on heparin reversal during off-pump coronary artery bypass: a clinical study.

Salvatore Suelzu · Andrea Cossu · Giovanni Pala +5 more

Currently, a dose of protamine equal to 1 mg for each 100 units of heparin given is used to reverse the residual heparin activity following off-pump coronary artery bypass. We hypothesized that a 1:1 ratio (ratio of protamine to heparin) could be higher than necessary inducing post-operative disturbance of hemostasis.

Rhabdomyolysis in hyponatremia and paraneoplastic syndrome of inappropriate antidiuresis.

Elisabetta D'Adda · Rosina Paletta · Fabio Brusaferri +6 more

We report a 26-year-old woman admitted to our hospital for generalized tonic seizure. Laboratory investigations revealed severe hyponatremia possibly triggered by vomiting and diarrhea. 24 hours after correction of hyponatremia she developed diffuse myalgias and marked hyperCKemia. Syndrome of inappropriate antidiuresis (SIAD) was suspected as cause of hyponatremia. Abnormal vaginal bleeding prompts gynecological evaluation and a small-cell carcinoma of uterine cervix was detected.

Trends in Mean Waist Circumference and Abdominal Obesity Among US Adults, 1999-2012

Earl S. Ford · L. Michele Maynard · Chaoyang Li

Waist circumference is a simple and valuable anthropometric measure of total and intra-abdominal body fat.1 The clinical guidelines from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute on the identification, evaluation, and treatment of overweight and obesity in adults recommend that clinicians assess waist circumference of their patients.2 Although the prevalence of abdominal obesity has increased in the United States through 2008,3 its trend in recent years is unknown. Therefore, our objective was to provide recent information about the trends in mean waist circumference and prevalence of abdominal obesity among adults in the United States from 1999 to 2012.

Newborn Screening for Severe Combined Immunodeficiency in 11 Screening Programs in the United States

Antonia Kwan · Roshini S. Abraham · Robert J. Currier +76 more

Newborn screening for severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) using assays to detect T-cell receptor excision circles (TRECs) began in Wisconsin in 2008, and SCID was added to the national recommended uniform panel for newborn screened disorders in 2010. Currently 23 states, the District of Columbia, and the Navajo Nation conduct population-wide newborn screening for SCID. The incidence of SCID is estimated at 1 in 100,000 births.

Sustained Care Intervention and Postdischarge Smoking Cessation Among Hospitalized Adults

Nancy A. Rigotti · Susan Regan · Douglas E. Levy +7 more

Health care systems need effective models to manage chronic diseases like tobacco dependence across transitions in care. Hospitalizations provide opportunities for smokers to quit, but research suggests that hospital-delivered interventions are effective only if treatment continues after discharge.

Physical Activity and Sedentary Behaviors Associated With Risk of Progression From Gestational Diabetes Mellitus to Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Wei Bao · Deirdre K. Tobias · Katherine Bowers +8 more

Women with a history of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) are at substantially increased risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The identification of important modifiable factors could help prevent T2DM in this high-risk population.

Infection Management and Multidrug-Resistant Organisms in Nursing Home Residents With Advanced Dementia

Susan L. Mitchell · Michele L. Shaffer · Mark Loeb +4 more

Infection management in advanced dementia has important implications for (1) providing high-quality care to patients near the end of life and (2) minimizing the public health threat posed by the emergence of multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs).
