Low-Frequency Vibrational Modes in Small Polypeptides of Essential Amino Acids -=SUP=-*-=/SUP=-

The length-dependent low-frequency terahertz absorption spectrum of the essential amino acid chains has been investigated. Since this special type of amino acids cannot be synthesized inside the human body, the feasibility of noninvasively monitoring their deficiency is of significant importance. Here, the considered chains consist of two to six identical essential amino acids forming homogeneous polypeptides. The terahertz vibrational modes are calculated for different chain sizes of these polypeptides. The low-frequency terahertz spectra show unique and specific absorption peaks. Several fascinating patterns for the chain-size-dependent position of the peaks are reported here that are feasible of being applied for their noninvasive detection. For instance, different shared and identical characteristics peaks are observed for the specific polypeptides which are independent of the chain-size. Furthermore, it is shown that the observed trends for the maximum populated peak in some of the essential polypeptides can be considered as a possible footprint for in the terahertz spectrum.

A 14-year girl with abdominal pain: case report of splenic cyst

The spleen cyst is a rare and often incidental finding that can be primary or secondary, parasitic or non-parasitic. Based on the size of the cyst, the patient may experience symptoms and plan of treatment based on size and symptoms will be done. Our patient was a 14 years old girl who had two years of vague abdominal pain and was referred to our hospital with severe abdominal pain. In the CT scan, three large cysts were observed in the spleen; another surgical consultation was done and recommendation for splenectomy was made. The patient became hydrated and treated with ceftriaxone and metronidazole.

Voltammetric Determination of Cysteine (2-amino-3-mercaptopropanoic acid, CySH) by Means of 4,4'-biphenol as a Homogeneous Mediator.

In the present research, 4,4'-biphenol was used as a homogeneous mediator for determining cysteine (CySH) on a Glassy Carbon Electrode (GCE). To describe the electrochemical properties of 4,4'-biphenol and to examine its electrocatalytic impacts on cysteine oxidation, both Cyclic Voltammetry (CV) and Linear Sweep Voltammetry (LSV) were employed. Our findings revealed that 4,4'-biphenol could significantly accelerate the reactions related to electron transfer to CySH. Moreover, the diffusion coefficient of CySH and its reaction with the catalytic constant of 4,4'-diphenoquinone was estimated via chronoamperometry technique. The results showed that cysteine concentration range of 10-1000 μM led to linear increases in the oxidation peaks, thus to providing a detection of 0.99 μM with R² = 0.993. A Relative Standard Deviation (RSD) of 2.5% was achieved after performing 7 cysteine replicates (100 μM), and CySH was successfully determined in real serum samples through the proposed approach.

SPION Conjugated Curcumin Nano-Imaging Probe: Synthesis and Bio-Physical Evaluation.

In this work, we investigated the loading and conjugation of Curcumin on oleic acid (OA) and citric acid (CA) functionalized iron oxide nanoparticles and its applications in improving contrast in MRI. Magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (FeO, MNPs) were synthesized using the co-precipitation method and characterized by XRD, DLS, FT-IR, VSM, and SEM. FT-IR results confirmed functionalization with oleic acid and citric acid. Curcumin was loaded and conjugated with the Nano-Systems and the amount of Curcumin loaded was quantified using spectrophotometry at 419 nm wavelength. The impact of solvent on the loading of Curcumin was studied. The wt% of loaded Curcumin was found to be 0.189 wt% using dimethylformamide (DMF) whereas using a combination of water-ethanol (15% v/v), this increased to 56.149 wt%. T2 relaxation time was determined using a 1.5 Tesla MRI machine; results showed that the MNPs reduced T2. Cytotoxicity of Nano-Systems (NS) in MTT assay showed that concentrations higher than 80 μg/mL (C > 80 μg/mL) could lead to cancer cell death and low concentrations, up to 40 μg/mL (C < 40 μg/mL) could be evaluated for diagnostic purposes.

An Overview on Probiotics as an Alternative Strategy for Prevention and Treatment of Human Diseases.

Probiotics are viable and useful microorganisms, which are beneficial factors for human and animal health by altering their microbial flora. Most of the probiotics belong to a large group of bacteria in the human gastrointestinal tract. There are several clinical shreds of evidence that show anti-carcinogenic effects of probiotics through altering digestive enzymes, inhibition of carcinogenic agents, and modulating the immune responses in experimental animals. Many studies have been performed to evaluate the potential effectiveness of probiotics in treating or preventing neurological diseases such as MS and novel treatment modality for T1D. The purpose of this study is to have an overview on probiotic microorganisms and to review the previous researches on the effects of probiotics on health through currently available literatures. The study was performed using following keywords; Probiotics, Cancer, Immune system, Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and Diabetes mellitus. PubMed/Medline, Clinicaltrials.gov, Ovid, Google Scholar, and Reaxcys databases used to find the full text of related articles. According to the current available data on probiotics and related health-promoting benefits, it seems that, consumption of probiotics can lead to the prevention and reduction the risk of cancer, diabetes, and multiple sclerosis. Although for the better and more decisive conclusion, there is a need to larger sample size clinical studies with more focus on the safety of these biological agents and their possible beneficial effects on different population.

Osteopontin ( Opn ) is one of the co-factors involved in cell adhesion and invasion during the implantation process. Several reports have shown Opn expression changes in diabetic condition in several tissues. In addition, an increased incidence of spontaneous abortion is reported in diabetic women. We, therefore, designed a study to evaluate the effects of diabetes on Opn expression at implantation time after treatment with metformin and pioglitazone.

Comparative evaluation of five different storage media and temperature effect on human periodontal ligament fibroblast viability

Following dental avulsion, the immediate recommended treatment is tooth replantation to avoid adverse effects. Therefore, the tooth must be stored in a physiological storage medium to preserve the viability of the periodontal ligament fibroblast (PDLF) cells during transportation to dental office. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of several storage media in preserving the viability of human PDLF cells at different times and temperatures. Materials & Methods: In this experimental study, the human PDL cells were obtained from the healthy extracted third molars and cultured in Dulbecco's Modified Eagle Medium (DMEM). The studied media were DMEM (10% FBS + 1% penicillin G Na (10000 IU) + 1% streptomycin (10 mg)), tap water, sterilized whole milk, zero fat milk and soy milk. After the cells had reached sufficient density in the plate, they were added to the experimental media and kept at 1, 2, 4 and 24 hours at 4° and 37 o Centigrade. After incubation, the cell viability was determined by tetrazolium saltbased colorimetric (MTT) assay. The results were statistically analyzed using Kruskal–Wallis and post hoc Tests. Results: Whole milk and DMEM showed significantly higher protective effect than other media. The viability of PDL cells had significant difference at 4 o C compared to 37 o C at 4 and 24 h in DMEM group and at 24 h in whole milk group (p≤0.05). Conclusion: The results have suggested that the whole milk like DMEM have enough essential nutrients for PDLFs and have confirmed the hypothesis that the milk similar to HBSS or DMEM might be effective in preserving the PDLF cells.
