Managing Strategy to Enhance Care for Children

Aaron Smith · J. F. Mainland · Irene Blais

The adoption of the Balanced Scorecard philosophy of measure, monitor and manage by The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) has resulted in SickKids' staff understanding, appreciating and ultimately being able to accept the enhanced transparency and accountability around performance, at both the system and hospital levels. The leadership of the organization observed these differences after initial SickKids scorecard update meetings, realizing this was not a flavour of the month but a totally new way of operating in a quest to achieve SickKids' vision and mission. Almost immediately, the internal culture began to shift as staff better understood how their roles actively contribute to the organization's ability to execute on its strategy. Based on 2010 staff engagement results, 70% of staff "see a direct link between personal work objectives and SickKids' strategy," while 60% were familiar with the newly released strategic plan, unprecedented results based on current benchmarks. This article provides an overview of the SickKids strategy management system, outlining both best practices and the journey from its launch to induction into the Balanced Scorecard Hall of Fame. Performance, at all levels across the enterprise, has shown measureable improvement with the introduction of the comprehensive strategy management system.

Revisiting the cost of medical student education: a measure of the experience of UT Medical School-Houston.

Elizabeth Gammon · Luisa Franzini

This study uses a cost construction model to estimate the cost of a four-year undergraduate medical education at the University of Texas-Houston Medical School (UT-Houston) in 2006-2007 compared to 1994-1995. The model computes the cost by measuring increasingly inclusive definitions of the educational mission: instructional (direct-contact teaching), educational (instructional plus general supervision), and milieu (educational plus research costs). Using the model and adjusting for inflation, annual cost per student enrolled decreased by 16 percent in 2006-2007 compared to 1994-1995 and total cost decreased by 9 percent. Additionally, the model predicted 190 full-time equivalent (FTE) faculty and 187 FTE residents for 2006-2007 compared to 201 FTE faculty and 258 FTE residents for 1994-1995. Decreases in the cost of educating medical students were driven by (1) the reduction in the number of educator contact hours required for curriculum delivery; (2) change in the mix of educators; and (3) an increase in medical school class size.

POTENCIAL HIDRÁULICO EM BACIAS HIDROGRÁFICAS I: IDENTIFICAÇÃO DE QUEDAS DE ÁGUA PARA GERAÇÃO DE ENERGIA ELÉTRICA

Reynaldo Furtado Faria Filho · João Batista Lopes da Silva · Paulo Afonso Ferreira +2 more

A New Paradigm for Biospecimen Banking in the Personalized Medicine Era

Sandra McDonald · Mark A. Watson · Joan Rossi +3 more

Banking of high-quality, appropriately consented human tissue is crucial for the understanding of disease pathogenesis and translation of such knowledge into improvements in patient care. Traditionally, tissue banking has been thought of as primarily an academic research activity, but tissue and biospecimen banking is increasingly assuming clinical importance, especially with the advent of genetic and proteomic testing approaches that rely on fresh or fresh frozen tissue. These approaches are part of the revolution in personalized medicine. This revolution's impact on biorepositories-their mission and day-to-day function-will be profound. Direct patient care will require structuring tissue procurement to become a routine part of patient care. Accordingly tissue banking will expand from its traditional research role in large academic medical centers into the everyday practice of surgical pathology. Successful implementation of this model will require consideration of several financial, medicolegal, and administrative issues.

College Students and Service: A Mixed Methods Exploration of Motivations, Choices, and Learning Outcomes

Ronald D. Chesbrough

The purpose of this study was to add to our understanding of the motivations toward service among college students, to get a clearer sense of how students choose their service involvements, and to better understand the learning outcomes from service involvement during college. Findings indicated differences in how students spoke about their service and learning outcomes based on gender, hours of service, and year in college. Implications of research findings include recommendations for marketing of service opportunities to students, involving students in service early in their college years, and expanding and centralizing service as a core mission of the college or university.
