Narrativizing’ global health: discursive legitimation strategies in the arena of epidemiological surveillance

Pedro Miguel Moreira da Fonseca · Maria Ferreira

The goal of this paper is to discuss discursive legitimation strategies in the arena of global epidemiological surveillance. Literature on global health policies has addressed the increased relevance of epidemic surveillance. However it remains to be discussed in depth which discursive strategies are employed in order to legitimate epidemiological surveillance and intelligence. Departing from Leeuwen’s work (2008) concerning discursive legitimation strategies this paper intends to debate how health authorities, namely the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, use narrative legitimation tools in order to validate its policy options. The legitimation discursive strategies of authorization and rationalization (Leeuwen, 2008) are addressed in order to understand how political narratives increasingly frame global health issues employing normative representations. The global health discourses developed by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control are discussed from the perspective of the legitimation discursive strategies mentioned above.

Female stardom in contemporary Romanian new wave cinema

Andrea Virginás

This article analyses film roles, red-carpet appearances and nonfilmic performances of three of the most well-known and admired actresses of the Romanian New Wave (Luminița Gheorghiu, Maria Popistașu and Anamaria Marinca). Their unglamorous female stardom is paradoxical if considered from the standpoint of mainstream/dominant cinema and the tradition described by Jackie Stacey as “[t]he ‘visual pleasure’ offered by the glamour and sexual appeal of Hollywood stars” (159). Aspects such as the major contradiction between screen role and screen persona, or the lack of ideal(istic) images offered to the audience are theorised on the basis of Christine Gledhill’s and Richard Dyer’s models, Anne Morey’s term of “the elegiac female grotesque” and Ana Salzberg’s concept of narcissistic Hollywood female stardom and embodied experience (107). The coherence of unglamorous female stardom as a real-life discursive construct emerges in the article through the consideration of Romanian New Wave cinema–similarly to 1970s-1980s New Indian Cinema in which unglamorous female stars existed (Gandhy-Thomas)–as a peripheral cinematic formation defined by a specific relation to glamour and consumption (Dyer, Gundle). Furthermore, the article suggests that this coherence is dependent on considering the production context of the Romanian New Wave in the framework of small national European cinemas (Hjort and Petrie, Soila), while emphasising the lack of integrated studio background (Haskell) and the fact that its female stars have been conditioned by postcommunist possibilities to articulate female public identities (Pasca Harsanyi, Roman).

The taming of the Bronies

Maria Pramaggiore

The notion of identification in visual media that require user participation is problematic. When images become clickable and navigable, then the viewer is no longer a viewer but a participant in the unfolding of the narrative. Theories of visual representation and cinematic spectatorship cannot fully account for modes of interactive spectatorship because the more the viewer is kinesthetically implicated into the formation and progression of moving images, the more the interactive action moves towards the literal realm. In this article, I explore emerging forms of interactive spectatorship through Stanton Audemars’s controversial Stockholm: An Exploration of True Love (2008), and connect those to a broader critical history of the sociological aspects of cinema. Stockholm: An Exploration of True Love challenges the boundaries of a voyeuristic subjectivity that is free of the tension associated with acting out desires elicited by the images on the screen, by inviting the viewer to become complicit in the virtual performance of sadomasochistic acts. An exploration of the processes of conditioning and reorienting spectatorship in interactive films can offer profound insights into the pedagogical potential of interactivity, especially through examples that push the boundaries of both interactivity and cinematic representation.

Inf(l)ection of the medium

Mónika Dánél

Slitfilm (Résfilm, 2005) and The Gravedigger (A sírásó, 2010) are two Hungarian experimental films made using a slit camera. The director/photographer Sándor Kardos’s adaptations of Ryūnosuke Akutagawa’s short story “The Handkerchief” and of Rainer Maria Rilke’s “The Gravedigger” expose a particular “physiognomy” of the filmic medium through the use of this technique. Likewise, the face as the privileged medial surface for emotion becomes an uncanny, stretched painting with grotesque associations, similar to Francis Bacon’s paintings. The sharp, clear narrator’s voice, layering the literary texts “onto” the moving image further emphasises the colour-stained plasticity of the visible. Both films attempt to articulate a liminal experience: the cultural differences between the East and the West that are inherent in expressing and concealing emotions (Slitfilm) or the questions relating to life and death, the speakable/conceivable and the unspeakable/inconceivable (The Gravedigger) that are embedded in the communicative modalities of social interaction. Through the elastic flow of images, the face and the hand become two uncovered, visible, corporeal surfaces engaged in a rhythmic, chromatic relationship (due to the similar skin tones of face and hand), and thus gradually uncover the medium of the film as a palpable skin surface or violated, wounded flesh. The article approaches the fluid, sensuous imagery that displaces the human towards the inhuman uncanny of the unrecognisable flesh through Deleuzian concepts of fold and inflection.

Nieznany przekład Roty na język karaimski

Anna Sulimowicz

The oldest known translations of Polish literature into the Karaim language date back to the 17th century. Among those poets whose works have been translated we find Jan Kochanowski and Adam Mickiewicz. Another Polish author that can be read in Karaim is Maria Konopnicka. A translation of her work Rota (The Oath) was recently discovered in the Jozef Sulimowicz manuscript collection means. The translator was Leon Eszwowicz, who taught religion to Karaite children in Halicz. Although his translation is not of great or significant literary value, it remains an interesting example of the interest shown by Karaites in Polish literature.

Reflexões sobre a humanização na assistência de enfermagem obstétrica na visão do enfermeiro obstetra

Maria Adriana Correa Borba Alves

Reflections on humanization in nursing obstetric care: from nurse’s point of view Aim: To identify importance of the interrelationship between healthcare professionals and the patient, and the humanization of obstetric care during labor. Method: The methodology used was that of literature review. Results: With modernization and the increasing use of technological devices, an estrangement can be noted between professionals and patients. The former must always be watching the functioning of the equipment and, due to the large number of tasks they must carry out, not much time is left for humanization, which leaves much to be desired in terms of human relationships. Humanization policies have been introduced, and investments focusing on training and updating for healthcare Recebido em 10 de agosto de 2014; aceito em 15 de abril de 2015.
