Pulmonary artery sling: An uncommon cause of stridor

Maria Oliveria · Marta Silva · Milagros Garcia +5 more

Pulmonary artery sling is a rare congenital condition often associated with congenital tracheal stenosis. Untreated pulmonary sling carries a high morbidity and mortality, most of which is due to the airway and other associated anomalies rather than the aberrant artery itself. We report the case of an infant presenting progressive respiratory distress after a viral infection. The workup revealed a left pulmonary sling with concomitant tracheal stenosis. This anomaly was successfully corrected by slide tracheoplasty and left pulmonary artery reinsertion. Conclusion pulmonary artery sling is a rare entity with a nonspecific clinical presentation, a high degree of clinical suspicion is needed in order to obtain the correct diagnosis.

Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome in children, epiphenomenon of a known or unknown disease

Giuseppe Napoli · Antioco Sanna · Chiara Leoni +2 more

Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome, also known as reversible posterior leukoencephalopathy syndrome or reversible posterior cerebral edema syndrome, is a recently described disorder of the cerebrovascular autoregulation system with multiple etiologies, most of which cause acute hypertension. Its clinical symptoms include headache, decreased alertness, mental abnormalities such as confusion, diminished spontaneity of speech, and changed behavior, stupor, seizures, vomiting, and abnormalities of visual perception such as cortical blindness. Radiologic appearance consists in cortical/subcortical posterior cerebral artery territory lesions. We describe two cases of this disease in pediatric patients caused by different clinical conditions but supported by the same pathophysiology. Early recognition of posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome as a complication during different diseases and therapies in childhood may facilitate precise diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Camila Felin Nunes · Andreas Dittmar Weise · Flaviani Souto Bolzan Medeiros

Considering the organizational practices and financing of strict post-graduate studies existing in Germany this article intends to prepare an alignment proposal in the areas of research that the Postgraduate Program in Industrial Engineering from the Federal University of Santa Maria/RS (PPGEP-UFSM) can adopt to stimulate regional industries to fund research on the course. Therefore, they analyzed 29 companies that are part of the Regional Development Council region and has Santa Maria/RS as county seat. Data were collected by the Registry of the Industrial Federation of Industries of Rio Grande do Sul State, Economy and Statistics Foundation and the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics. To adopt a graduate of the financing model similar to that practiced in Germany, it is recommended that the PPGEP-UFSM seek greater affinity between their lines of research and production activities of regional industries. It is suggested that the program develops research in machinery compatible with that produced in the region for the production of food production technologies and also to improve the handling and processing of grain and meat, thus enabling local industries an improvement in conditions competitiveness.

Big Data in Medical Science–a Biostatistical View

Harald Binder · Maria Blettner

Inexpensive techniques for measurement and data storage now enable medical researchers to acquire far more data than can conveniently be analyzed by traditional methods. The expression "big data" refers to quantities on the order of magnitude of a terabyte (1012 bytes); special techniques must be used to evaluate such huge quantities of data in a scientifically meaningful way. Whether data sets of this size are useful and important is an open question that currently confronts medical science.

Treino do bacio: estudo observacional numa amostra de crianças saudáveis entre os 18 e os 42 meses

Ângela Maria Pereira · Jean-Pierre Gonçalves · Ângela Oliveira +4 more

Toilet training is an important stage in child development. There are few studies and guidelines and our bibliographic research found no national epidemiological data on this subject. The aim of the present study was to determine the patterns of toilet training in a Portuguese population, the factors that may be related to its timing and duration, and methods used. Methods: In this cross-sectional study we selected a convenience sample of children who were seen in three primary healthcare centers. Data were collected using a questionnaire given to parents of children between 18 and 42 months old (M). Children with chronic conditions that affect bladder and bowel control, twins, and replies with incomplete data were excluded. Results: Eighty three questionnaires were completed. In 24, the child had not started toilet training. Of the remaining 59 repies, 31 were from boys, with a mean age of 31M [standard deviation (SD)=9]. Mean initiation and completion ages of training were 22M (SD=7) and 27M (SD=7) respectively (earlier in girls). Families living in rural settlements, employed mothers and mothers with less than 5 years of formal education started training earlier. Of the 20 children who completed toilet training, the mean duration was 3M (median 2M [0-16M]). Early initiation of intensive toilet training correlates with an earlier age at completion of training (p = 0.005) but also a longer duration (p = 0.046). The most methods most frequently employed by caregivers were positive reinforcement training and showing examples. Conclusions: Toilet training shows a high variability of factors in this population. We found that female children of employed mothers with less formal education living in rural areas initiate toilet training earlier. There was a statistically significant difference between starting toilet training at a younger age and the acquisition of control of sphincters earlier, but with longer duration of training.
