Healthcare Networks in Metropolitan Areas - The Case of the Health System in Brazil

Juliana Pires de Arruda Leite · Ana Maria da Costa Teixeira Carneiro

The health care system in Brazil given its size and geographic scope is an example of the complexity and often fragmentation in health policy implementation. In the middle of this health systems' fragmentation, the concept of Healthcare Networks emerges and consolidates. The notion of healthcare networks proposes that the health system must be organized through coordinated points to provide continuous and integrated care, based on cooperation between managers, providers, and users. In Brazil in 2010, the Ministry of Health enacted an ordinance defining the healthcare network as a management model to be pursued by the national health policy in order to address most of the difficulties of fragmentation. The Brazilian health policy is decentralized and is the responsibility of municipalities to implement it through federal funds. However, a defining feature of healthcare networks is their regional character, as it becomes necessary to go beyond the municipal boundaries for resource optimization. This scenario of inter-regional relations gains greater density when the territory is configured in an urban superstructure, as it is in the case of metropolitan regions. In this sense, a deeper analysis of the governance forms of Healthcare Networks in a metropolitan scale becomes very fruitful. Thus, this paper proposes to discuss the cases of Healthcare Networks in Brazilian metropolitan regions, characterizing its implementation process as well as identifying management problems in the various cases. This study, which is part of a post-doctoral research, is grounded on data provided by agencies responsible for health management in the federal and state levels, as well as the current literature on healthcare networks. Results include the analysis of metropolitan networks implemented within their different stages, challenges and advances.

An Introduction to Videogame Genre Theory. Understanding Videogame Genre Framework

Tulia-Maria Cășvean

Paraphrasing Eco, the "playing contract" should allow players to instantly recognize a genre. Videogames use resources from the fertile field of popular culture, exploiting models, pre-worked materials, well-known heroes, stereotypes, and myths. Since genres have multiple meanings, functions, production models and audience expectations that evolve through time, it is important to understand if a videogame genre framework exists or if there are just labels or marketing tools used by the game producers. Finding out if there is a blueprint for videogame genres requires the understanding of specific elements and their arrangement. Being aware that it is not possible to present an exhaustive genre categorization but only a general structure of the videogame genres, this paper uses the genres’ framework identified by Aaretsh, Smedstad and Sunnanå (2003) and integrates interviews with professionals. It also reviews the general and the specific genre literature and analyses the role and the characteristics of several elements that articulate the videogame genres.

Applying Problem based learning in the Sports Science Curriculum

Maria Konstantaki

Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of problem based learning (PBL) in improving the student learning experience in sports science. PBL is an innovative method of learning within experiential learning that has been used extensively in other disciplines, but its use within sports science is limited. Method: Twenty five undergraduate students (20 male, 5 female) in their second year of study of the BSc (Hons) in Sports Science and Coaching Studies (mean ± SD age: 20.1 ± 4.0 y) were recruited to the study. All students attended the study module entitled ‘Sports Injuries’ that was delivered in a three hour weekly block (one hour lecture, two hours laboratory practical). The PBL intervention lasted 12 weeks. In the classroom, at the end of each lecture, the students watched a video recording of a taping or strapping technique for a specific sports injury and took notes. In the laboratory, students formed small groups of three (one practitioner, one patient, one observer) and performed the taping procedures using their notes, recollection of the video and with minimal guidance from the lecturer. The lecturer only provided feedback upon completion of the procedure. At the end of the study period, students were asked to complete a ten-item questionnaire expressing their views on PBL, its effectiveness, its advantages/disadvantages, its benefits to assessed work, the lack of lecturer involvement and their enjoyment of the module. Results: Students commented that PBL was a ‘fun way to learn’, ‘it gave freedom to interact with peers’, ‘it helped to improve concentration, critical thinking as well as practical skills’. On the other hand, it was suggested that it would be beneficial for some less confident students if the lecturer gave a demonstration of the procedure in the beginning of the practical class. Discussion: Findings showed overwhelming student support of PBL as an alternative method of teaching and learning in sports science. With PBL the lecturer facilitates rather than dictates the learning process which is beneficial for the students’ journey towards independent learning

Renata Maria do Amaral

This paper examines how gastronomic journalism is related to Brazilian contemporary consumer culture. Therefore, we resort to concepts such as imaginative hedonism (Campbell); taste, distinction and lifestyle (Bourdieu); and renovation of desire by fashion (Lipovetsky). The corpus includes the section Food of Folha de S. Paulo newspaper, a pioneer as an independent section about this subject published between 1988 and 1992 and reissued in 2011. The cultural phenomenon of gastronomy is observed in the context of the growing of the middle class in the country, when more people start eating out and thinking more about what they eat, looking for information on the subject to guide their choices.

Renata Maria do Amaral
