The problems of geometry and mechanics have driven forward the generalization of the concepts of number and function. This shows how application and generalization together prevent that mathematics becomes a mere formalism. Thoughts are signs and signs have meaning within a certain context. Meaning is a function of a term: This function produces a pattern. Algebra or modern axiomatic come to mind, as examples. However, strictly formalistic mathematics did not pay sufficient attention to the fact that modern axiomatic theories require a complementary element, in terms of intended applications or models, not to end up in a merely formal game.

The Pena d’Agua Rock-shelter (Torres Novas, Portugal) was excavated in 1992–2000, revealing a long stratigraphic and cultural sequence including Middle Neolithic occupations. A preliminary study on its fauna was published by Valente (1998) based on the 1992–1994 material, but the 1997–2000 campaigns remained unstudied. The aim of this study is to present the full fauna analysis of the layer Db, dated from the earlier phases of that period. Like other assemblages from the same time frame in the area, the fauna collection understudy is small. Its bones showed several surface and chemical alterations due to sediment pressure, exposure to fire and water percolation. Regarding the taxonomical abundances, most remains were classified as rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) and sheep and/or goat (Ovis aries/Capra hircus). A few specimens of cervid, fox (Vulpes vulpes) and bird were also identified. The other fauna assemblages from the region show either the prevalence of the caprine component (as in Pena d’Agua) or a higher abundance of cervids. This trend may reflect a specialized animal exploitation and we propose that the Middle Neolithic human communities in the Limestone Massif had a subsistence strategy based on caprine exploration, supplemented by some cervid (red deer) hunting. These hunter-herders groups were probably highly mobile and may have practiced some kind of transhumance (or itinerant pastoralism), for which the details are still unknown. Keywords: Middle Neolithic, Zooarchaeology, Pena d’Agua Rock-shelter, Portuguese Estremadura, Hunter-Herders. The coast from Punta Tresino to Ogliastro at the National Park of Cilento and Vallo di Diano is rich in caves while the bottom is cloaked in seagrass meadows on which shipwrecks dating from the Roman era and World War II were found. Natural landscapes, above and below water, interspersed with eloquent archaeological landmarks: coastal quarries, a roman harbour, remains of maritime villa with aquaria for fish farming. For this multileveled territory, a project proposal for the construction of underwater archaeological nature routes which aims to promote new ways of using archaeological heritage would be desirable.

Vernacular architecture has been growing over time with continuities, changes, transformations and adaptations to the different social and economic conditions of each period in response to actual needs with the available means of every place. Continuities in vernacular architecture are closely related to space, time and materiality and involve structural, typological, functional and social issues with multiple readings and interpretations. The recent abandonment of a large number of traditional dwellings mainly due to urbanization and the romantic nostalgia towards the past have led to the conservation and reuse of traditional buildings following a different approach compared to previous periods. Τhe previous tactic of segmented partial and on-going maintenance without interrupting the continuity and use has been replaced today with an integrated comprehensive and thorough conservation and transformation of a building. Is conservation of vernacular architecture an act of continuity with the past or discontinuity within the context of the existing data and processes? When conserving traditional buildings is it possible to accomplish morphological, structural and social continuity? How is the potential integrity of traditional buildings achieved? These are some of the questions discussed in this paper with the focus of seeking a contemporary way of keeping alive and genuine the relationship with the cultural works of the past.

The paper explored the relationships between general weighted average (GWA) and type of parents’ employment and educational attainment, type of family structure, study habits, nutrition, and extracurricular activities of fourth year college students aged 19 – 20. Using a stratified random sample, the population was divided into subpopulations or strata (i.e., low achieving, average, and high achieving students). A sample was drawn from each. Fifty-eight (58) students (10 low achievers, 42 average, and 6 high achievers) participated in the study. Findings showed that a higher GWA was associated with length of study before break, regular supper intake, frequency of exercise, weekend activity, and extracurricular activities. The findings suggest that frequent breaks during study time, regular supper intake, participating in extracurricular activities in school, boosting level of exercise, and arranging a weekend activity may sharpen college students’ performance in school. The significant finding of a positive link between regular supper intake and academic performance in college students is something new and surprising given the importance that most literature place on eating breakfast to start the day. Apparently, the relationship between regular supper intake and academic performance in university students has received little attention from practitioners and researchers in the field of education.
