Sofia Anwar · Maria Khushbakhet · Aisha Asif +1 more

Development of any nation is estimated through child health condition. In particular, the fourth millennium development goal out of eight is to reduce the mortality rate. The target set under this goal was to reduce by two-third, between 1990 and 2015, the proportion of child mortality. Maternal BMI is closely associated with child nutritional status. Weak mother having low BMI has low nutrition status which effect child weight. Healthy and balance food of mothers have positive effect on their child. Underweight mother can have impaired and poor growing kids. This study presents impact of some socio-economic demographic and maternal health related factors on health status of children in selected South Asian countries i.e. Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal. The study used micro data from demographic and health survey (DHS) of Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal. Multinomial logistic regression results revealed that mother education, mother working status, mother health, availability of safe drinking water, family size and vaccination have significant effect on child health. Mother's education is positively associated with healthy child. Working mothers are more likely to have healthy child. Ageing and intergenerational family ties in Arab countries

Nabil M. Kronfol · Anthony Rizk · Maria Arlene Jackan anak Siba

This paper explores the dominant issues in intergenerational ties in Arab countries with a view to highlighting patterns, trends and challenges as well as policy implications. The data were drawn from a review of scholarly work and published literature in Arab countries and from a regional mapping of ageing policies and programmes in 2012. Social and health ageing policies in the region have been set with the premise that the family represents the core safety net for older Arabs. Yet demographic, sociocultural and economic transitions, as well as political conflict in the Arab world, are bringing profound changes to familial structures. This review feeds into efforts to promote health and social reforms that approach intergenerational solidarity from several fronts: providing equitable old-age income security, fostering cross-generational interactions, embracing caregivers and home-based care, promoting age-responsive actions in emergencies and conflicts, and prioritizing context- and country-specific research on the levels, types and trends in intergenerational and familial support.

The Grimm legacy in portuguese children's literature: the case of "Little Red Riding Hood"

In Portugal, the diffusion of Grimm’s texts began in the nineteenth century with children’s books as Maria Amalia Vaz de Carvalho and Goncalves Crespo’s Contos para os nossos filhos (1882) and some translations by Henrique Marques Junior in «Biblioteca das Criancas» (1898-1910). The divulgation of versions of the “Red Riding Hood” was also important in periodical publications. In fact, within the Portuguese literary context, the rewritings of this narrative – either imitatively, subversively or parodically – have mostly followed the reassuring German model, as in, for example, Guerra Junqueiro’s “O chapelinho encarnado” (1877), or Alice Gomes ( A Nau Catrineta e a Outra Historia do Capuchinho Vermelho , 1967). Contemporary children’s books such as Saldanha’s O Gorro Vermelho (2002) or Ducla Soares’ A Menina do Capuchinho Vermelho no Seculo XXI testify the survival of intertextual effects derived from the classic tale. Historia do Capuchinho Vermelho contada a criancas e nem por isso (2005), written by Manuel Antonio Pina with works in pastel by Paula Rego, uses, to a certain extent, Perrault’s French version as ur-text, in keeping with the work of the referred artist. This paper focuses on the beginnings of Grimm’s fairy tale Portuguese editions, as well as on several contemporary narratives inspired by “Little Red Riding Hood”.
