In Memoriam. Elżbieta Maria Walerian, Ph.D., D.Sc.

Elżbieta M. Walerian, Ph.D., D.Sc., a retired employee of the Institute of Fundamental Technological Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IPPT PAN), passed away after a serious illness, on the 26th December 2013. She was one of the scientific leaders in the Section of Environmental Acoustics of IPPT PAN and her career, educational and organizational activities were inseparably linked with the acoustics. Elżbieta Walerian was born on August 9th 1950 in Poznań. She graduated from the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, receiving her Master of Science degree in the environmental acoustics in 1973. Five years later, under the supervision of Professor Ignacy Malecki, she obtained her PhD title, in the physical acoustics, in IPPT PAN in Warsaw. In 1979 she began working at the Section of Environmental Acoustics of IPPT PAN, where she dealt with the diffraction of acoustic waves and a description of the sound field produced by vehicles moving in an urban area.

The Effect Of Sodium Chloride On Growth And Quality Of Plectranthus Forsteri Benth. ‘Nico’

Experiments were conducted on the response of Plectranthus forsteri ‘Nico’ to NaCl. Plants were grown in pots of 1.5 dm3 and 0.15 dm3 water solution of NaCl at concentrations 0, 5, 10, 15, 20 g dm−3 in 2011 and 0, 10, 20, 30, 40 g dm−3 in 2012 were applied one time in the beginning of experiment. Sodium chloride applied at 10-40 g NaCl·dm−3 water, reduced plant growth and values of SPAD readings. It may be stated that Plectranthus forsteri ‘Nico’ plants are tolerant to medium concentrations of sodium chloride (5-20 g NaCl·dm−3 water) and therefore can be planted in flowerbeds in urbanized areas

The Untapped Potential Of Plant Thin Cell Layers

Thin cell layers (TCLs), which contain a small number of cells or tissues, are explants excised from different organs (stems, leaves, roots, inflorescences, flowers, cotyledons, hypocotyls/epicotyls, and embryos). After almost 45 years of research, this culture system has been used for several monocotyledonous and dicotyledonous plants of commercial importance, and for model plants. The limited amount of cells in a TCL is of paramount importance because marker molecules/genes of differentiation can be easily localized in situ in the target/responsive cells. Thus, the use of TCLs has allowed, and continues to allow, for the expansion of knowledge in plant research in a practical and applied manner into the fields of tissue culture and micropropagation, cell and organ genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry, and development. Starting from a brief historical background, the actual and potential uses of the TCL system are briefly reviewed

Monitoring and Analysis of the Performance Data of a RO-PAX Ship in the Perspective of Energy Efficiency

The rising cost of fuel, the more and more severe international standards and a growing awareness of the environmental impact of pollutant emissions have led energy efficiency to become a theme of great interest in the marine sector. The strategy for increasing energy efficiency may refer both to the consumption reduction and to the increase of energy recovery systems. This need turns out in monitoring and control strategies for energy processes on board. Monitoring information is recorded and stocked in a database, that needs to be analyzed to find out patterns in large data sets. A huge amount of data, from a RO-PAX ship, has been analyzed in order to gain a further insight into ship performances. Improvements in ship energy performances could be reached with an intense study of the historical data of the vessel attitude

A proposal for a tourism regionalization of Poland based on the highest levels of tourism in a region

The paper presents a brief review of twenty proposals for tourism regionalization of either a part of or the whole of Poland (or attempts to delimit the most attractive areas in terms of leisure), formulated between 1938 and 2012. It also analyses selected definitions of tourism regions and discusses the indicators which are proposed for the delimitation of tourism regions. Moreover, the paper attempts to indicate areas with the highest levels of tourism, in part modelled on Maria Mileska (1908-1988). It includes academic (precise) criteria for the designation of tourism regions. Some researchers’ comment that Mileska’s work is (partially) outmoded not so much from the methods employed as in the number of tourism regions and the areas covered. This should be regarded as understandable given that this regionalization was formulated at the beginning of the 1960s. The method that used and developed in a creation as much aspossible should be in according the object to be studied. In addition the science actuallydinamic, constantly evolving, follow the civillization and the advancement of science world.In academic realm, especially in the field of artistic creation, a person scientificallyresponsible for the work he/she created. The same thing also applied for usage anddevelopment of a model and research method that will be applied to a case of art creations. Asfar the process could be scientifically explained; systematics in a report in form of thesis ordissertation.In art cretions, works that created won’t have any value when there is no narrativebehind the work. Hal yang sama berlaku bagipenggunaan dan pengembangkan suatu model dan metode penelitian yang akan diterapkanpada sebuah kasus penciptaan sebuah karya seni. Sejauh proses tersebut dapat dijelaskansecara ilmiah, sistematis dalam sebuah laporan berbentuk tesis maupun disertasi.Dalam penciptaan seni, karya yang diciptakan tidak akan memiliki nilai (value) ketikatidak ada narasi di balik karya tersebut.
