Multi-sensor longitudinal control with fault tolerant guarantees

John J. Martinez · Maria M. Seron · Jose A. De Dona

This paper deals with the problem of obtaining fault-tolerant guarantees of a multi-sensor switching strategy for longitudinal control. The strategy selects, at each instant of time, the sensor (belonging to a collection of sensors) that provides the best closed loop performance, as measured by a control-performance criterion. It is assumed that each sensor has an associated feedback controller that has been designed such that the sensor-controller pair stabilises the closed loop system under normal operation conditions. Recent refinements for constructing ultimate-bound invariant sets allow obtaining less conservative fault-tolerant guarantees. Stability of the switching system under fault-free operation conditions and under presence of sensor failures are established in the main results of this paper.

Velhice e espaço rural: (re) desenhos dos discursos

Adriana de Oliveira Alcântara · Aline Gadelha de Almeida Duarte · Maria Helena de Paula Frota

This research aims to study the daily lives of older residing in ruralareas, through ethnographic field research. The results indicate, not necessarily, as wassupposed, a standardization of specific tasks for men and women; there is a perceivedlack of internalisation of symbolic values arising from capitalism that understands theold as "disposable" and "useless", but rather, there is a growing role of them before theage of reality.

Management of a Refractory Malignant Pleural Effusion in a Patient with Small Cell Lung Cancer: A Case Report

Maria Wilczynska

Malignant pleural effusion (MPE) is a common presenting feature of underlying malignancy and frequently results in debilitating symptoms. In chemosensitive malignancies, such as lymphoma, small cell lung or ovarian cancers3, chemotherapy is often considered the first line treatment, however if unsuccessful, pleural intervention to achieve fluid control is required. This may include therapeutic thoracentesis, chest drain insertion, thoracoscopy, chemical pleurodesis, and use of an ambulatory indwelling pleural catheter (IPC) or a combination of the above procedures. Our case describes the management of a patient with a refractory MPE secondary to metastatic small cell lung cancer. No consensus exists to guide the management of patients with MPE secondary to chemosensitive disease and a personalised strategy should be adopted. Patients should be informed of all currently available therapeutic options, and further research performed focusing on the effect of these approaches, in combination with palliative chemotherapy, on patient related outcome measures.
