Evaluation of 5th grade English curriculum according to stufflebeam’s

Ezgi Darama · Fethi Karaduman · Kadir Kahraman +1 more

Communication is the transfer of any sensation, thought or information to the other side in different ways. The most important means of communication among people is language. Foreign language is called as languages except native language. English is very important as the first foreign language in our country and it has become an effective tool for communicating, participating in international business activities and learning about events around the world. Language teaching is more than educating a class; it is a process involving different activities, and it is the teacher's responsibility to determine when and how learners will interact in the classroom environment. English teachers want to provide their students with the information they need to be competent at a certain level of target language and English curriculum has also been changed. Curriculum evaluation is considered as an element of the curriculum. For this reason, the purpose of the this study is to assess the Secondary School 5th grade English Curriculum according to Stufflebeam's CIPP model, depending on the teacher's opinions. In this study, it is aimed to present an existing situation by referring to teachers' opinions on Secondary School English Curriculum, thus a descriptive model was used and this is a "single case study" .The sample of the research consists of 10 teachers who actively work in a private school in the province of Aydın in the academic year of 2017-2018.Semi-structured interview form was used to determine the opinions of teachers ,who are practitioners of the 5th grade in secondary school, about English Curriculum .The interview form consists of 12 questions, 3 for context evaluation, 3 for input evaluation, 4 for process evaluation and 2 for product evaluation. In this context, as a result of the interviews made with the teachers as the practitioner and the expert of the curriculum, it has been inferred that the curriculum has not been properly fulfilled in an assessment and measurement as a result of the partial deficiencies when we analyzed the content, process and product. This case indicates that those who implement the curriculum are undecided about the curriculum

Quantitative Evaluation of Normal Aqueductal Cerebrospinal Fluid Flow Using Phase‐Contrast Cine MRI According to Age and Sex

Oner Zulal · Sagіr Kahraman Aysegul · Kose Evren +4 more

The aim of this study was cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow quantification in the cerebral aqueduct using phase‐contrast cine magnetic resonance ımaging (PCC‐MRI) according to both sexes and three different age groups to obtain normative data. Seventy two volunteers with no cerebral pathology were included in this study. Subjects were divided into three age groups: 20–34 years, 35–49 years, and 50–65 years including equal gender groups. CSF flow's quantitatively evaluation was performed with images that were obtained by 1.5 T Magnetic Resonance (MR) unit from cerebral aqueduct level on the semi‐axial plan. Between groups, peak velocity (cm sec −1 ), average velocity (cm/s), forward volume (mL), reverse volume (mL), net forward volume (mL), and average flow over range (ml/min) values of current flowing through aqueduct and average aqueductal areas were compared. There were no statistically significant differences in CSF flow parameters among different age groups and between sexes ( P  > 0.05). There was a statistically significant difference in average cerebral aqueduct area between the age group of 50–65 years and the other age groups ( P  = 0.002). The average aqueductal area was higher in the age group of 50–65 years. Normal aqueductal CSF flow parameters evaluated with PCC‐MRI don't show a significant difference by age and sex. We have achieved the lower and upper values of these parameters would be useful in future clinical studies. The size of aqueductal area may also be explained by atrophy‐dependent ventricular system dilatation in the elderly. Anat Rec, 300:549–555, 2017. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Serum galectin‐3 level as a marker of thrombogenicity in atrial fibrillation

Kocyigit Duygu · Gurses Kadri Murat · Yalcin Muhammed Ulvi +7 more

Background Left atrial appendage flow velocity ( LAAFV ) and presence of spontaneous echo contrast ( SEC ) have been reported to be predictors of thromboembolism in atrial fibrillation ( AF ) patients. Galectin‐3 is a biomarker reflecting pro‐inflammatory status, whose role in AF has recently drawn attention, particularly in persistent AF population. Aim In this study we aimed to investigate the association between serum galectin‐3 levels and echocardiographic predictors of thromboembolism in persistent AF patients. Methods We included 65 persistent AF patients (55.50±10.67 years, 46.15% male). Transesophageal echocardiography ( TEE ) was performed to assess LAAFV and presence of left atrial ( LA )/ LA appendage ( LAA )‐located SEC and thrombus prior to direct current cardioversion or catheter ablation for AF . Results Median galectin‐3 level was 0.63 ng/mL. Serum galectin‐3 levels were significantly correlated with LAAFV ( r =−.440, P <.001). Serum galectin‐3 levels were associated with presence of SEC ( P <.001), and LA thrombus ( P =.008). Receiver operating characteristic analysis revealed that a serum galectin‐3 greater or equal to the cut‐off value of 0.69 predicted presence of SEC with a sensitivity and specificity of 91.00% and 79.00%, respectively ( P <.001). Conclusion In conclusion, in the setting of persistent AF , serum galectin‐3 levels are associated with presence of SEC and LAAFV on TEE . Our findings suggest that serum galectin‐3 level may have a place in thromboembolism risk stratification in persistent AF patients.

Synthesis, Structural Aspects, Antimicrobial Activity, and Ion Transport Investigations of Four New [1 + 1] Condensed 12‐Membered Cyclophane Amides

Gürbüz Mustafa Ulvi · Aghatabay Naz Mohammed · Karabulut H. Rıza Ferhat

Two new diamines ( a , b ) and their four [1 + 1] condensed macrocyclic peptides ( c–f ) were synthesized via dilution method affording the expected dilactams in reasonably high‐yield yields. The compounds were characterized by elemental analyses, mass, FT‐IR, 1 H, and 13 C NMR spectral data. Mass spectra reveal their [1 + 1] cyclic condensation. The macrocycles having two peptide units in the ring would constitute three configurational isomers: cisoid–cisoid, transoid–transoid, and cisoid–transoid. Their 1 H and 13 C NMR show one signal for each chemically equivalent SCH 2 and CONH and could be assigned symmetrical structures lacking any configurational isomerism. The ion transport activity of the compounds ( c ) and ( d ) on Na + and K + ions were evaluated by CH 2 Cl 2 liquid–liquid membrane method using a U tube system. Slightly higher affinity for potassium than sodium was also observed, which is undoubtedly related to the matching size of the cavity between K + and cyclic peptides. The antimicrobial and antifungal activities of four macrocyclic amides (c , d , e , and f) were illuminated using disk diffusion method in dimethyl sulfoxide as well as the minimal inhibitory concentration dilution method, against several bacteria and yeast cultures. Comparing all methods, in most cases, the ( e ) and ( f ) compound seems to show slightly higher biological activity than the ( c ) and ( d ) macrocycles. This may be because of the presence of extra chlorine atoms on the exterior part of the molecules.

Reconstruction of Anomalous Portal Venous Branching in Right Lobe Living Donor Liver Transplantation: Malatya Approach

Yilmaz Sezai · Kayaalp Cuneyt · Isik Burak +24 more

Reconstruction of anomalous portal vein branching (APVB) during right lobe living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) can be challenging. The goal of this article is to describe our surgical technique, named the Malatya Approach, in case of APVB during right lobe LDLT. The technique unifies the APVB and obtains a funnel‐shaped common extension with a circumferential fence by a saphenous vein conduit. In total, 126 (10.6%) of 1192 right lobe grafts had APVB that were divided into 2 groups according to the adopted surgical techniques: the Malatya Approach group (n = 91) and the previously defined other techniques group (n = 35). Both groups were compared regarding portal vein thrombosis (PVT), postoperative 90‐day mortality and survival. PVT developed in 3 patients (3.3%) in the Malatya Approach group and developed in 10 (28.6%) patients for the other group ( P  < 0.001). There were 8 (8.8%) 90‐day mortalities in the Malatya Approach group (1 PVT related) and 15 patients (9 PVT related) died in the other techniques group ( P  < 0.001). Mean follow‐up time for both groups was similar (999.1 days for the Malatya Approach group versus 1024.7 days for the other group; P  = 0.47), but longterm survival in the Malatya Approach group was better than in the other group (84.6% versus 40%; P  < 0.001). Multivariate analysis revealed that the Malatya Approach group showed less PVT development and longer survival ( P  < 0.001). This technique is promising to avoid PVT and mortalities in cases of APVB during right lobe LDLT. Liver Transplantation 23 751–761 2017 AASLD .

Surface nanocrystallization of SAE 1008 steel by single and multipass thread rolling process

Kahraman F. · Gençer G. M. · Kahraman A. D.

In this study, the layers are investigated which are obtained on the surfaces of the single and multi‐pass thread rolled screws. It is observed that deformation is more homogenous depending on the pass number and thread laps failure do not form on the 3‐passed threads. A nanocrystallized layer that thicknesses and size depends on deformation amount is determined on the surfaces of the thread rolled SAE 1008 steel. While top of this layer has finer grain sizes, depending on the deformation amount grains coursed and oriented by the deformation direction. The finer grains are observed in the single pass thread rolled sample as size of 136 nm at the 15 μm inside from the surface of the root of the thread. Compared with bulk material, significant hardness increase is observed on the surfaces of the all thread rolled samples. The effect of pass number on the hardness is very low, increases of the pass number, hardness increases slightly. But thicknesses of layer are enhanced to increase the pass number.
