In line with advances in diagnostic methods and expectation of a decrease in the number of negative laparotomies, selective non-operative management of abdominal gunshot wounds has been increasingly used over the last three decades. We aim to detect the possibility of treatment without surgery and present our experience in selected cases referred from Syria to a hospital at the Turkish-Syrian border.

. The importance of analysis high resolution satellite imagery plays an important research topic for geographical information analysis of cities. Geospatial data plays an important role in important issues such as governmental, industrial, research topics on traffic management, road monitoring, GNSS navigation, and map updating. In this study, road detection from satellite imagery methods are classified as classification-based, knowledge-based, mathematical morphology and dynamic programming. In the beginning, the road structures including feature and model are analyzed. Then, the advantages and disadvantages of road detection methods are evaluated and summarizes their accuracy and performance based on road detection principles. Therefore, in order to obtain remarkable results for road detection, it is better to use more than one method. In after days, performing a complex road extraction from a satellite image is still a necessary and important research topic.

. Wild forest fires are one of the most important disasters that affect the forest ecosystem especially in the regions with arid climate conditions. Besides, forest fires threats human life and results in seriously property loss. In order to fight forest fires effectively, it is crucial that firefighting team should reach fire location and start fire extinguishing activities within the critical response time. Since firefighting teams are transported to fire locations by fire-trucks, the optimum route with minimum travel time should be determined by considering available road network. “New Service Area” tool under “Network Analyst” extension of ArcGIS can be used to determine a region that can be reached from a point within a specified time period. In this study, it was aimed to evaluate the locations of current firefighting teams and investigate locations of potential firefighting teams using “New Service Area” tool. The study area is located in Mustafakemalpasa in Bursa where forest lands are sensitive to forest fires at the second degree and there is currently one firefighting team in the area. The results indicated that 31.28% of forest land can be reached by current firefighting team within the critical response time. When including new firefighting teams, it was found that accessible forest lands increased to 71.55%. It can be concluded that locating new firefighting teams should be established in the study area to increase the accessible forested areas on time and GIS-based decision support systems can be effectively used to fight forest fires regarding with disaster management.

The purpose of this study is to analyze American remake versions of the original British films taking narrative as a basis. It claims that the American remakes put America forward as a cultural product for sale, and makes the British narrative Americanized. For the study, four films have been chosen for analysis: Alfie (1966, dir. Lewis Gilbert), Alfie (2004, dir. Charles Shyer), Bedazzled (1967, dir. Stanley Donen), Bedazzled (2000, dir. Harold Ramis). This study explores the narrative elements of the American remakes by comparing the remakes with their originals. These narrative elements are setting, intertextuality and Americanization.

The problem of finding a synchronizing sequence for an automaton is an interesting problem studied widely in the literature. Finding a shortest synchronizing sequence is an NP-Hard problem. Therefore, there are heuristics to find short synchronizing sequences. Some heuristics work fast but produce long synchronizing sequences, whereas some heuristics work slow but produce relatively shorter synchronizing sequences. In this paper we propose a method for using these heuristics by considering the connectedness of automata. Applying the proposed approach of using these heuristics make the heuristics work faster than their original versions, without sacrificing the quality of the synchronizing sequences.

Objective: The study was conducted in order to determine factors affecting quality of life in children and adolescents with beta-thalassemia. Methods: The data of the this descriptive research were collected from thalassemia centers in Aegean region which provided their permission. Sample selection was not made and enrollment of all voluntary children and adolescents with thalassemia aged between 8 and 18 into the study was planned and the study was conducted with a total of 98 participants. Data were collected by face-to-face interview technique with the help of informative form for children and adolescents with thalassemia and Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory TM 4.0. Independent t test was applied for determining the relation between variables. Results: Fifty percent of the participants were in 8-12 age group while the remaining 50% were in 13-18 age group. The study was conducted with equal number of male and female participants. No significant relation could be determined between quality of life score averages of the children and adolescents with beta-thalassemia and their age at diagnosis, frequency of transfusions, Hb and ferritin values, their possible endocrinologic, hearing, cardiac and mouth-teeth problems. A significant difference was determined between quality of life score averages of participants and their status of school absence and having education about sickness. Conclusion: Children and adolescents without school absence, who received education about sickness from a health personnel have a more improved quality of life.
