KCNMA1gene expression a promising biomarker in childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia

Zaid Khalid · Fadhel M. Lafta · Abdul-Ameer N. Ghaloub Al-Rekabi

Amplification and over expression of ions channels have been suggested to involve in tumourgenesis. This study was set to assess the expression level of KCNMA1gene, encodes for calcium-activated potassium channel, in a set of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) patients in Iraq-Baghdad. Relative expression utilising RT-PCR technique was used to estimate the KCNMA1gene expression in 31 cases diagnosed with childhood ALL. The results showed that the vast majority (77.42) of the investigated ALL cases have over expression of KCNMA1.While only 22.58 of the cases express normal to low levels of KCNMA1 gene.Over all, the present study results suggest an oncogenic role for KCNMA1gene expression in childhood ALL and this would be assessed further in large scale studies to investigate its prognostic and therapeutic potential utility.

Knowledge, attitude, and perception of dental undergraduates and interns on radiographic protection in Iraq.

Shahad Dhurgham Ali · Lubna Makki Hussein · Ameer M.J Twair

Background: Radiation hazards are harmful and precarious, especially considering professional negligence or ignorance. Objectives: This study aims to assess the knowledge, attitude, and perception (KAP) of undergraduate dental students and interns toward radiation protection protocols. Design: This study is institutional based. Materials and method: The study participants comprised 255 dental undergraduate students and interns, whose curriculum includes dental radiology. Information was collected from each participant through structured questionnaires (18 questions) containing answers in the form of multiple choices. Statistical analysis, frequency distribution and percentage were determined, and chi-square test was performed to evaluate the statistical significance. Results: Among the 255 samples enrolled in the study, 75 were interns and 180 were undergraduates (85 and 95 from third and fourth years, respectively). The overall correct response was 79%, which in descending order was interns (92%) > fourth-year students (86%) > third-year students (60%). Conclusion: The KAP level with regard to radiation protection protocol was highest with interns and the least with the third-year students. This outcome necessitates incessant teaching to ensure maximum safety.

Original Research Article Background: Teachers can play a key role in identifying and supporting students with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. In order to achieve this role, it is vital for teachers to have obvious knowledge about this disorder. Aim: The study was identified teachers' knowledge about attention deficit hyperactivity disorder among primary school children. Design: A descriptive analytic design was used. Setting; this study was conducted at primary schools in Basra Governorate center. Simple: Random Sample consisted of 200 teachers from primary schools were included. Tools; A questionnaire is developed as a tool for data collection. Results: The main results of study reported that (83.5%) of teachers. Had not received training courses during experience years about attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Also, there was (50.5%) of teachers had poor knowledge compared to only (13.5%) had good knowledge about attention deficit Hyperactivity disorder. The Impact of phonetic Cues in Connected Speech

Assist. Instructor - Rasha Tareq Awad Al -Zubaidi · Instructor Sinan Ameer Yousif

The present study is an attempt to shed light on the term 'juncture' in the English Language. The study is theoretically and practically oriented. The problem lies in the fact that Iraq EFL college students may face difficulty in their recognition in continuous speech, the sequences of words uttered without conventional spaces between them. The listener in general and EFL college students in particular how they are understood what the speaker said for instance, I scream and ice cream?    In this study, the researcher tries to explain how the phonetics cues which help the listeners to understand the difference between the utterances that they have the same phonetic transcription and how the phonetic cues signaling the boundaries between words in connected speech .? The hypotheses of the study (1)The EFL college students can recognize the two similar utterances in connect speech when they listened to them. (2) the EFL college students are not able to recognize the two similar utterances in connected speech.   The results show that the first hypothesis is refuted, that the Iraqi EFL College students do face difficulty in discrimination of two identical phonetic transcriptions. The second hypothesis is verified that EFL college students do not aware of how to use phonetics cues. In the light of the conclusions arrived at, several pedagogical recommendations and suggestions for teaching English as a foreign language have been made

A Critical Discourse Analysis of Donald Trump’s Inaugural Address in 2017

Ameer Ali · Mohammad Ibrahim Mohammad Ibrahim

The current research work is a critical discourse analysis of Donald Trump's Inaugural Address (2017). The researcher has made use of Ruth Wodak’s Discourse Historical Model (2004) to study the inaugural address. Moreover, the current research work is qualitative in its approach and analysis, as it answers the research questions in accordance with Ruth Wodak’s Discourse Historical Model (2004). Furthermore, research design used in this research is both descriptive and explanatory; and, it also contains purposive sampling as a data collection method. Although much CDA research has been already carried out on Trump’s speeches, the current research studies Trump’s speech in the context of history and power using Ruth Wodak’s Discourse Historical Model (2004). The researcher has focused lexical and syntactic items in Trump’s speech. Besides, the researcher has found out that power relations, historical norms, ideological constraints, and American values have played a significant role in the discursive construction of Trump’s Inaugural address (2017). Finally, the current research convincingly achieves its objectives and answers its questions.

Impact of body weight on shifting of foot pressure among adult subjects

Enas Fawzy Youssef · Alsayed Abdelhameed Shanb · Mariam A. Ameer +1 more

PURPOSEThe aim of the study was to compare the distribution of foot plantar pressure between normal and obese adult subjects during walking.METHODSSixty male and female adult volunteers (aged 20-40) were recruited into the study. They were equally divided into 30 normal subjects (BMI = 18.5-22.9 kg/cm²) into group I and 30 obese subjects (BMI ≥ 25.0 kg/cm²) into group II, according to their BMI.RESULTSThere were statistically significant differences between normal and obese subjects in foot length, width, and pressure distribution in the hindfoot, midfoot, forefoot, and toes. There was a statistically significant increase in the plantar pressure of all measured areas in obese persons in comparison with the normal subjects. In addition, all measures of foot pressure showed statistically significant differences between the same sex of both groups, while the obese subjects of both genders have higher foot pressure in all measured areas. High positive correlations were detected between BMI, peak pressure, foot contact, and foot width in both groups, but there was a weak positive correlation between normal BMI and foot contact area.CONCLUSIONThe distribution of plantar foot pressure is different in adult obese subjects than in normal adult subjects during walking activity. The obese persons have larger foot length, width, higher peak pressure, and contact area. This study can help physical therapists to understand the differences of foot pressure between normal and obese subjects, and consequently, to detect any expected foot abnormalities accompanied by obesity.
