The paper deals with intellectual legacy of Kazan University professor N.A. Vasiliev (June 29, 1880–December 31, 1940), the forerunner of modern nonclassical logic. A thinker with a wide range of interests, he worked in poetry, philosophy, ethics, psychology, and history. N.A. Vasiliev’s path to imaginary logic is presented, along with the revival of his ideas in the early 1960s and their contemporary development.

We examine anomalous dimensions of higher spin currents in the critical O(N)scalar model and the Gross-Neveu model in arbitrary d dimensions. These twomodels are proposed to be dual to the type A and type B Vasiliev theories, respectively. We reproduce the known results on the anomalous dimensions to theleading order in 1/N by using conformal perturbation theory. This work can beregarded as an extension of previous work on the critical O(N) scalars in 3dimensions, where it was shown that the bulk computation for the masses ofhigher spin fields on AdS_4 can be mapped to the boundary one in conformalperturbation theory. The anomalous dimensions of the both theories agree witheach other up to an overall factor depending only on d, and we discuss thecoincidence for d=3 by utilizing N=2 supersymmetry.

We present new infinite-dimensional spaces of bi-axially symmetricasymptotically anti-de Sitter solutions to four-dimensional Vasiliev higherspin gravity, obtained by modifications of the Ansatz used in arXiv:1107.1217,which gave rise to a Type-D solution space. The current Ansatz is based oninternal semigroup algebras (without identity) generated by exponentials formedout of the bi-axial symmetry generators. After having switched on the vacuumgauge function, the resulting generalized Weyl tensor is given by a sum ofgeneralized Petrov type-D tensors that are Kerr-like or 2-brane-like in theasymptotic AdS4 region, and the twistor space connection is smooth in twistorspace over finite regions of spacetime. We provide evidence for that thelinearized twistor space connection can be brought to Vasiliev gauge.

We study a generalization of the D-dimensional Vasiliev theory to include atower of partially massless fields. This theory is obtained by replacing theusual higher-spin algebra of Killing tensors on (A)dS with a generalizationthat includes "third-order" Killing tensors. Gauging this algebra with theVasiliev formalism leads to a fully non-linear theory which is expected to beUV complete, includes gravity, and can live on dS as well as AdS. Thelinearized spectrum includes three massive particles and an infinite tower ofpartially massless particles, in addition to the usual spectrum of particlespresent in the Vasiliev theory, in agreement with predictions from a putativedual CFT with the same symmetry algebra. We compute the masses of the particleswhich are not fixed by the massless or partially massless gauge symmetry, finding precise agreement with the CFT predictions. This involves computingseveral dozen of the lowest-lying terms in the expansion of the trilinear formof the enlarged higher-spin algebra. We also discuss nuances in the theory thatoccur in specific dimensions; in particular, the theory dramatically truncatesin bulk dimensions D=3,5 and has non-diagonalizable mixings which occur inD=4,7.

We examine the marginal deformations of double-trace type in 3dsupersymmetric U(N) model with N complex free bosons and fermions. We computethe anomalous dimensions of higher spin currents to the 1/N order but to allorders in the deformation parameters by mainly applying the conformalperturbation theory. The 3d field theory is supposed to be dual to 4dsupersymmetric Vasiliev theory, and the marginal deformations are argued tocorrespond to modifying boundary conditions for bulk scalars and fermions. Thusthe modification should break higher spin gauge symmetry and generate themasses of higher spin fields. We provide supports for the dual interpretationby relating bulk computation in terms of Witten diagrams to boundary one inconformal perturbation theory.

Nonlinear higher-spin equations in four dimensions admit a closed two-formthat defines a gauge-invariant global charge as an integral over atwo-dimensional cycle. In this paper we argue that this charge gives rise topartitions depending on various lower- and higher-spin chemical potentialsidentified with modules of topological fields in the theory. The vacuumcontribution to the partition is calculated to the first nontrivial order for asolution to higher-spin equations that generalizes AdS4 Kerr black hole ofGeneral Relativity. The resulting partition is non-zero being in parametricagreement with the ADM-like behavior of a rotating source. The linear responseof chemical potentials to the partition function is also extracted. Theexplicit unfolded form of 4d GR black holes is given. An explicit formularelating asymptotic higher-spin charges expressed in terms of the generalizedhigher-spin Weyl tensor with those expressed in terms of Fronsdal fields isobtained.

It was recently shown that the CFT dual of string theory on ${\rm AdS}_3\times {\rm S}^3 \times T^4$, the symmetric orbifold of $T^4$, contains aclosed higher spin subsector. Via holography, this makes precise the sense inwhich tensionless string theory on this background contains a Vasiliev higherspin theory. In this paper we study this phenomenon directly from theworldsheet. Using the WZW description of the background with pure NS-NS flux,we identify the states that make up the leading Regge trajectory and show thatthey fit into the even spin ${\cal N}=4$ Vasiliev higher spin theory. We alsoshow that these higher spin states do not become massless, except for thesomewhat singular case of level $k=1$ where the theory contains a stringy towerof massless higher spin fields coming from the long string sector.

A two-dimensional Sp($2N$) vector model with small $\mathcal{N}=4$superconformal symmetry is formulated, and its chiral algebra is shown to begenerated by superprimary fields of even conformal weight. This vector model isthe large level limit of a coset theory with large $\mathcal{N}=4$, whoseproposed AdS$_3$ dual is a minimal Vasiliev higher spin theory with gaugealgebra generated by fields of even spin. The relation of this vector model tothe symmetric product orbifold, dual to tensionless strings in AdS$_3$ $\times$S$^3$ $\times$ $\mathbb{T}^4$, is also worked out.

The form of higher-spin current interactions in $AdS_4$ is derived from thefull nonlinear higher-spin equations in the sector of Weyl 0-forms. Thecoupling constant in front of spin-one currents built from scalars and spinorsas well as Yukawa coupling are determined explicitly. Couplings of all otherhigher-spin current interactions are determined implicitly. All couplings areshown to be independent of the phase parameter of the nonlinear higher-spintheory. The proper holographic dependence of the vertex on the higher-spinphase parameter is shown to result from the boundary conditions on the bulkfields.
