On the monophyly of Porrhothele antipodiana (Porrhothelidae: Mygalomorphae) and a new species of Porrhothele from Banks Peninsula

Thompson Shaun · Morgan-Richards Mary · Trewick Steven A. +1 more

Porrhothele (Mygalomorphae: Porrhothelidae) is a genus of tunnelweb spider endemic to New Zealand. The most frequently encountered species, Porrhothele antipodiana , is widespread throughout New Zealand and it has been suggested that it might represent a cryptic species complex. A phylogenetic hypothesis was generated using sequences of mitochondrial DNA cytochrome oxidase 1 from specimens collected throughout New Zealand. The genetic evidence suggests that P. antipodiana comprises a single widespread species consistent with morphological evidence. However, additional novel lineages were revealed by the analysis for which morphology suggests the presence of undescribed species. One of these, Porrhothele peninsularis sp. nov. is described. http://lsid:zoobank.org:pub:F4159C21-C4BA-4982-BF0B-D24632A89734

The New Zealand genus Tetrachaetus (Diptera: Dolichopodidae): synonymisation of Tetrachaetus bipunctatus and T. simplex

Kerr D. Steven · Gillum Joanne E. · Fleury Kane

The New Zealand genus Tetrachaetus Bickel & Dyte, 1989 (Dolichopodidae: Sympycninae), is a fairly common long-legged fly lineage often found in riparian habitats. As first described by Parent ( 1933 ), the genus included two species, Tetrachaetus bipunctatus and T. simplex . The species are similar and attempts by modern specialists to differentiate them have been unsuccessful. Here a large number of specimens from major New Zealand collections were reexamined and the genus is revised. Based on morphometric, phenotypic, chaetotaxic and genetic evidence the two putative species are in fact conspecific, and are here formally synonymised under Tetrachaetus bipunctatus Parent ( 1933 ). https://www.zoobank.org/NomenclaturalActs/6AD20BE2-77D2-4D04-8295-1AAAC7F3F2FF

Toward Destigmatization of Mental Health: The Institutional Role of Advertising

Ertimur Burçak · Chen Steven

Mental health conditions represent one of the most pressing health challenges of the twenty-first century. Given the global prevalence, high cost, and profound consequences of mental disorders, the marketplace has become a critical arena for advancing mental health awareness and destigmatization. This paper examines how brands promote mental health awareness and seek to mitigate mental health stigma through advertising. Inspired by transformative advertising research, we use institutional theory as our enabling lens and examine brand advertising as institutional work. Using a grounded theory-inspired Gioia method, we analyze 176 advertisements on mental health awareness. The findings reveal three forms of institutional work—advocating, educating, and motivating—that are utilized by brands and suggest mechanisms through which they can lead to destigmatization of mental health issues. By focusing on the institutional role of advertising in raising awareness and facilitating destigmatization of mental health issues, this study contributes to transformative advertising research. It extends strategies that promote mental health awareness and reduce mental health stigma. By considering advertising as institutional work, the study highlights connections amongst macro–meso–micro levels of analyses in destigmatization processes.

Race in televised football: insights from behind-the-scenes within major English football media organizations

Van Sterkenburg Jacco · Blum Irene · Fried Mariana +2 more

This article presents findings from an ethnographic study that looked at how football media professionals working at major English football TV stations give meaning to race and ethnicity in their working practices. We got access to the main English televised football organizations to do in-depth interviews and participant observations for several months and examine the daily practices, routines and meaning-making of football media professionals in these organizations. The main research question is as follows: How do English football media professionals give meaning to race/ethnicity in televised football production? Findings show how some football journalists tend to dismiss any discussion on race in media coverage as irrelevant. Others embrace diversity in general terms while they, at the same time, hardly reflect on reproduction of racial stereotypes in their own coverage or their organization. Findings will be placed in a wider academic context drawing on insights from Cultural Studies and Critical Whiteness Studies.

PolSAR sea-land segmentation combining EM and MPM algorithms

Wang Y. · Li Y. · Shi X. +1 more

Accurate sea-land segmentation is crucial for effective coastline dynamic monitoring. However, existing methods often struggle to achieve sufficient accuracy due to challenges posed by Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar (PolSAR) speckle noise and the scattering confusion problems. To address these limitations, this paper proposes a regional PolSAR sea-land segmentation method that integrates the Maximization of Posterior Marginals (MPM) algorithm with the Expectation-Maximization (EM) algorithm. Firstly, geometric tessellation is applied to partition the image domain. Within the Bayesian framework, the complex Wishart distribution with the improved stationary Potts model are integrated to construct a regional PolSAR sea-land segmentation model. Subsequently, the MPM and EM algorithms are jointly employed to accomplish parameter estimation and sea-land segmentation. A Generalized Multiple-Try Reversible (GMTRJ) sampler in the MPM algorithm is designed to enhance parameter search space, enabling precise sea-land segmentation. To implement the GMTRJ sampler, the EM algorithm is applied to estimate the mean sample covariance matrix set of the complex Wishart distribution. The proposed method is tested using real PolSAR data. Experimental results indicate that the real parts of the determinants associated with the mean-covariance matrices rapidly converge to stable values, which significantly facilitates accurate sea-land segmentation. Quantitatively, the proposed method attains an overall accuracy of 98.9%, a Kappa coefficient of 0.972, and a Hausdorff distance of 2.8 pixels. Comparative analysis against three benchmark methods confirms that our approach delivers superior segmentation performance.

A systematic review of cognitive and social factors in vessel traffic services operations

Sharma Amit · Mallam Steven · MacKin Scott N. +1 more

Vessel traffic service (VTS) plays a key role in the safety of maritime navigation by organising the sea traffic, ensuring regulatory compliance, promoting information exchange and early detection of navigational hazards and assisting in collision avoidance. The cognitive and social factors influencing the performance of VTS operators require important considerations in this regard. Current developments in the maritime industry and changing operational profiles present novel challenges for VTS operators. This study aims to present the empirical findings related to the applied cognitive and social factors pertaining to VTS operations for the past two decades. A systematic literature review was conducted with a Boolean search strategy across six major databases. The literature associated with empirical investigations was extracted as per the PRISMA guidelines. The study identified 19 articles that satisfied the pre-determined inclusion criteria. A qualitative synthesis of the identified literature was performed, aggregating the findings into various sub-groups based on thematic areas and contexts. The obtained results revealed fatigue and mental workload as the most frequently examined factors, while factors such as decision-making, communication, coordination and perception also influenced the VTS operator’s performance. The findings shed light on the current state of the art for research and practical applications related to cognitive and social factors influencing VTS operator performance and their impact on maritime safety. The result also identified gaps in the literature where further research is warranted, particularly related to emerging trends of automation and digitalisation in the maritime industry.
