Investigation of GeSn Strain Relaxation and Spontaneous Composition Gradient for Low-Defect and High-Sn Alloy Growth

Recent development of group-IV alloy GeSn indicates its bright future for the application of mid-infrared Si photonics. Relaxed GeSn with high material quality and high Sn composition is highly desirable to cover mid-infrared wavelength. However, its crystal growth remains a great challenge. In this work, a systematic study of GeSn strain relaxation mechanism and its effects on Sn incorporation during the material growth via chemical vapor deposition was conducted. It was discovered that Sn incorporation into Ge lattice sites is limited by high compressive strain rather than historically acknowledged chemical reaction dynamics, which was also confirmed by Gibbs free energy calculation. In-depth material characterizations revealed that: (i) the generation of dislocations at Ge/GeSn interface eases the compressive strain, which offers a favorably increased Sn incorporation; (ii) the formation of dislocation loop near Ge/GeSn interface effectively localizes defects, leading to the subsequent low-defect grown GeSn. Following the discovered growth mechanism, a world-record Sn content of 22.3% was achieved. The experiment result shows that even higher Sn content could be obtained if further continuous growth with the same recipe is conducted. This report offers an essential guidance for the growth of high quality high Sn composition GeSn for future GeSn based optoelectronics.

A Study on the Factors Influencing Triglyceride Levels among Adults in Northeast China

Triglyceride (TG) abnormalities are the most prevalent type of dyslipidaemia in the people of northeast China. Many researchers have investigated the prevalence, treatment and control of TG abnormalities, but little is known about the associations between the TG values and the factors that influence TG levels. This study aims to reveal quantile-specific associations of TG with its risk factors. A sample of 16,340 participants in Jilin Province were included in this study. A quantile regression (QR) model was performed to identify the factors that affected TG levels in different quantiles. The distribution of TG levels was different between males and females ( χ 2  = 155.77, P  < 0.001). Body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) were positively associated with TG levels in all quantiles. Drinking was positively associated with TG levels in high quantiles ( P 70.6 to P 95 ) only in males, while age had a positive association with TG levels in all quantiles only in females. The risk of WC on TG levels was higher with increasing TG levels, and smokers were more at risk for increasing TG levels, as well.

Si Nanocrystal-Embedded SiO x nanofoils: Two-Dimensional Nanotechnology-Enabled High Performance Li Storage Materials

Silicon (Si) based materials are highly desirable to replace currently used graphite anode for lithium ion batteries. Nevertheless, its usage is still a big challenge due to poor battery performance and scale-up issue. In addition, two-dimensional (2D) architectures, which remain unresolved so far, would give them more interesting and unexpected properties. Herein, we report a facile, cost-effective, and scalable approach to synthesize Si nanocrystals embedded 2D SiO x nanofoils for next-generation lithium ion batteries through a solution-evaporation-induced interfacial sol-gel reaction of hydrogen silsesquioxane (HSiO 1.5 , HSQ). The unique nature of the thus-prepared centimeter scale 2D nanofoil with a large surface area enables ultrafast Li + insertion and extraction, with a reversible capacity of more than 650 mAh g −1 , even at a high current density of 50 C (50 A g −1 ). Moreover, the 2D nanostructured Si/SiO x nanofoils show excellent cycling performance up to 200 cycles and maintain their initial dimensional stability. This superior performance stems from the peculiar nanoarchitecture of 2D Si/SiO x nanofoils, which provides short diffusion paths for lithium ions and abundant free space to effectively accommodate the huge volume changes of Si during cycling.

Seasonal food habits and prey selection of Amur tigers and Amur leopards in Northeast China

We analyzed the scats of Amur tigers and Amur leopards, and examined their annual and seasonal food habits in Northeast China to comprehend their coexistence. Wild boar had the highest annual and seasonal consumption frequencies by the tigers, while both roe deer and sika deer were mostly preyed by the leopards annually. The three species appeared to be the key preys in terms of high proportion of consumed biomass by the two felids. Our data also revealed numerous mid-sized carnivores and small mammals included in the two felids’ food list. We used the relative abundance and biomass density estimation in prey density estimation to calculate the prey preferences of tigers and leopards, and both methods confirmed that Amur tigers strongly preferred wild boar. However, preference estimations of Amur leopards were not consistant, or even opposite to one another from the two methods. The results of the study suggested that prey preference of predators is largely determined by body size of the prey species. Variation in diet composition of the two felids suggests that resource partitioning may contribute to their coexistence.

Comparison of the safety and efficacy of triple sequential therapy and transscleral cyclophotocoagulation for neovascular glaucoma in the angle-closure stage

To compare the efficacy and safety of triple therapy combining intravitreal injection of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor, trabeculectomy, and pan-retinal photocoagulation via binocular indirect ophthalmoscopy, with that of transscleral cyclophotocoagulation (TCP) to treat neovascular glaucoma in the angle-closure stage. Eighteen triple therapy patients and 25 TCP patients between May 2014 and May 2016 were retrospectively analysed. Anterior chamber puncture and anti-VEGF intravitreal injection were performed on the first day of sequential therapy. Trabeculectomy was performed 3–5 d after injection; pan-retinal laser photocoagulation via binocular indirect ophthalmoscopy was initiated 5–7 d later. The IOP of the triple therapy group was lower than that of the TCP group (15.2 ± 2.2 vs. 20.0 ± 8.5 mmHg) and fewer anti-glaucoma drugs were used (0.5 ± 1.0 vs. 0.6 ± 1.0) after treatment. The success rates of the two groups were 89% and 60% respectively (P = 0.032). The visual function of 94% of triple therapy patients was preserved or improved compared to 64% of TCP patients with statistical significance (P = 0.028). No patient in the triple therapy group showed hypotony or eyeball atrophy. Compared to TCP, triple therapy shows higher success rate, fewer complications, and attributes to visual function preservation.

Multimorbidity Analysis According to Sex and Age towards Cardiovascular Diseases of Adults in Northeast China

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are great challenges in public health, where cardiovascular diseases (CVD) accounted for the large part of mortality that caused by NCDs. Multimorbidity is very common in NCDs especially in CVD, thus multimorbidity could make NCDs worse and bring heavy economic burden. This study aimed to explore the multimorbidity among adults, especially the important role of CVD that played in the entire multimorbidity networks. A total of 21435 participants aged 18–79 years old were recruited in Jilin province in 2012. Weighted networks were adopted to present the complex relationships of multimorbidity, and Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) was used to evaluate the burden of multimorbidity. The prevalence of CVD was 14.97%, where the prevalence in females was higher than that in males ( P  < 0.001), and the prevalences of CVD increased with age (from 2.22% to 38.38%). The prevalence of multimorbidity with CVD was 96.17%, and CVD could worsen the burden of multimorbidity. Multimorbidity and multimorbidity with CVD were more marked in females than those in males. And the prevalence of multimorbidity was the highest in the middle-age, while the prevalence of multimorbidity with CVD was the highest in the old population.

Association of Blood Pressure with Fasting Blood Glucose Levels in Northeast China: A Cross-Sectional Study

Hypertension and diabetes mellitus (DM) have become major public health issues, and previous studies have shown that there is an association between hypertension and DM. However, there is a lack of detailed information about this association. This study aimed to explore how different blood pressure (BP) levels were associated with fasting blood glucose (FBG) levels. A cross-sectional survey with adults aged 18 to 79 years was conducted in Jilin Province, China in 2012. Lambda-mu-sigma (LMS) was used to preliminarily explore the associations of BP with FBG. Quantile regression (QR) was performed to identify the specific associations by adjusting for confounding factors. The distributions of systolic blood pressure (SBP) ( χ 2  = 710.76, P  < 0.001) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) ( χ 2  = 460.20, P  < 0.001) were different according to gender. LMS showed that the associations of BP with FBG became stronger when the FBG levels were close to 5.6 mmol/L. QR showed that FBG was positively associated with SBP ( P 30 to P 90 ) and DBP ( P 20 to P 90 ) in males. In females, FBG was positively associated with SBP from only P 85 to P 90 . In summary, FBG was positively associated with BP in a gender-dependent manner.

Effect of multiple cyclic RGD peptides on tumor accumulation and intratumoral distribution of IRDye 700DX-conjugated polymers

Strategic delivery of IRDye 700DX (photosensitizer) is a key for improving its effect in photodynamic therapy. In this study, we have synthesized IRDye 700DX-conjugated polymers containing multiple cyclic RGD peptides to deliver IRDye 700DX selectively to tumor cells and tumor-associated blood vessels overexpressing α v β 3 integrin. Our polymer has a backbone of hydrophilic poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(L-glutamic acid) block copolymer, and cyclic RGD peptides are conjugated to side chains of the poly(L-glutamic acid) while IRDye 700DX is conjugated to the terminal of poly(ethylene glycol). The polymers exhibited selective accumulation to the target sites in a subcutaneous solid tumor, and the accumulation was augmented with the increased number of cyclic RGD peptides. More importantly, the polymer containing 15 cyclic RGD peptides in one construct revealed preferential accumulation on the tumor-associated blood vessels without compromising penetration to deep portions of the tumor, thereby drastically inhibiting tumor growth upon photoirradiation, while the polymer containing 5 cyclic RGD peptides showed moderate antitumor activity despite efficient accumulation in the tumor with almost homogenous intratumoral distribution. These results suggest that controlling the intratumoral distribution of IRDye 700DX is critical for successful PDT, and our polymer containing multiple cyclic RGD peptides may be a promising carrier for this spatial control.

E2F signature is predictive for the pancreatic adenocarcinoma clinical outcome and sensitivity to E2F inhibitors, but not for the response to cytotoxic-based treatments

The main goal of this study was to find out strategies of clinical relevance to classify patients with a pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) for individualized treatments. In the present study a set of 55 patient-derived xenografts (PDX) were obtained and their transcriptome were analyzed by using an Affymetrix approach. A supervised bioinformatics-based analysis let us to classify these PDX in two main groups named E2F-highly dependent and E2F-lowly dependent. Afterwards their characterization by using a Kaplan-Meier analysis demonstrated that E2F high patients survived significantly less than E2F low patients (9.5 months vs. 16.8 months; p = 0.0066). Then we tried to establish if E2F transcriptional target levels were associated to the response to cytotoxic treatments by comparing the IC50 values of E2F high and E2F low cells after gemcitabine, 5-fluorouracil, oxaliplatin, docetaxel or irinotecan treatment, and no association was found. Then we identified an E2F inhibitor compound, named ly101-4B, and we observed that E2F-higly dependent cells were more sensitive to its treatment (IC50 of 19.4 ± 1.8 µM vs. 44.1 ± 4.4 µM; p = 0.0061). In conclusion, in this work we describe an E2F target expression-based classification that could be predictive for patient outcome, but more important, for the sensitivity of tumors to the E2F inhibitors as a treatment. Finally, we can assume that phenotypic characterization, essentially by an RNA expression analysis of the PDAC, can help to predict their clinical outcome and their response to some treatments when are rationally selected.

The CAMI-score: A Novel Tool derived From CAMI Registry to Predict In-hospital Death among Acute Myocardial Infarction Patients

Risk stratification of patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is of clinical significance. Although there are many existing risk scores, periodic update is required to reflect contemporary patient profile and management. The present study aims to develop a risk model to predict in-hospital death among contemporary AMI patients as soon as possible after admission. We included 23417 AMI patients from China Acute Myocardial Infarction (CAMI) registry from January 2013 to September 2014 and extracted relevant data. Patients were divided chronologically into a derivation cohort (n = 17563) to establish the multivariable logistic regression model and a validation cohort (n = 5854) to validate the risk score. Sixteen variables were identified as independent predictors of in-hospital death and were used to establish CAMI risk model and score: age, gender, body mass index, systolic blood pressure, heart rate, creatinine level, white blood cell count, serum potassium, serum sodium, ST-segment elevation on ECG, anterior wall involvement, cardiac arrest, Killip classification, medical history of hypertension, medical history of hyperlipidemia and smoking status. Area under curve value of CAMI risk model was 0.83 within the derivation cohort and 0.84 within the validation cohort. We developed and validated a risk score to predict in-hospital death risk among contemporary AMI patients.
