Preemptive analgesia of nepafenac 0.1% in retinal photocoagulation

Emerson Fernandes de Sousa e Castro · Érika Araki Okuda · Vinícius Balbi Amatto +3 more

Non-Targeted Electrospray Mass Spectrometry-Based Metabolic Fingerprinting and PLS-DA-Based Classification of Brazilian "Malvas"

Cleverson Antônio Ferreira Martins · Mário Sérgio Piantavini · Rômulo Pereira Ribeiro +3 more

Malva sylvestris, popularly known as "malva" in Brazil, is a medicinal plant used for its antiinflammatory effects. However, multiple plants are known as "malvas" in Brazil; these species include Sida cordifolia ("malva-branca") and Pelargonium graveolens ("malva-cheirosa"). In this work, electrospray mass spectrometry metabolic fingerprints from these species were obtained by direct infusion of extracts of commercial samples, purchased as crushed dried leaves. The spectral data were used to classify these species using a partial least squares discriminant analysis method. The identities of all samples were confirmed by morphological analyses, emphasizing the trichomes morphology. While over 80% of the samples were labeled as M. sylvestris or "malva", in the present study only 37% of these samples were classified as M. sylvestris species. Approximately 50% of these samples were classified as S. cordifolia, whose consumption may be dangerous for patients with cardiovascular diseases. Thus, these analytical and chemometric procedures worked as a fast and simple method for classifying species of "malvas".

Polyanna Keitte Fernandes Gurgel · Francis Solange Vieira Tourinho · Akemi Iwata Monteiro

Educators' perspective on adolescent sexuality: possible education practices

Simone Cristine dos Santos Nothaft · Elisângela Argenta Zanatta · Maria Luiza Bevilaqua Brumm +4 more

This is a qualitative research carried out with 23 educators of public schools in the west of the state of Santa Catarina in 2012. It aimed at identifying their perspective on adolescence and sexuality and strategies to approach the theme. Data was collected using the Sensitive and Creative Method and analysed through thematic content analysis via two different categories: educators’ perception on adolescence and sexuality and the strategies used to approach the subject in schools. Teachers regard sexual education a complex and difficult issue and are usually afraid and poorly prepared to deal with it. Furthermore teachers’ perceptions differ on the relationship between that development stage and sexuality. While some use traditional methodologies, others adopt a participatory and dialogue-based strategy. We conclude that adolescent sexuality in school is still incipient; it is centred on traditional concepts emphasizing its biological aspects. Introduction of cross-cutting themes is challenging.

Renato Mendonça Ribeiro · Cláudia Bernardi Cesarino · Rita de Cássia H. M Ribeiro +4 more

This study aimed to: investigate the demographic characteristics of patients seen in the emergency department of a teaching hospital; identify the most common clinical emergencies; and identify the ultimate destination of these patients (medical discharge, hospitalization or death). This retrospective, cross-sectional, quantitative study. Data were collected from patients’ electronic medical records. Inclusion criteria were: adult patients 18 years or older, with a diagnosis of clinical emergency, seen in the period from January 2009 through May 2010. There was a predominance of: females (56.33%), of white ethnicity (86.95%), and mean age 48.74 ± 7.8 years. The most prevalent age group was 18-29 years. Most of the patients (99.65%) declared themselves to be active workers. 60.23% were married. The most frequent neurologic diseases found were: headache (29.03%); stroke (26.09%); and upper back pain (10.25%) and cardiological diseases were: precordial pain (38.98%), heart failure (25.79%), hypertension (12.29%) and cardiac arrhythmia (8.67%). The ultimate destinations of patients seen in the emergency department were: medical discharge (55.8%) and hospitalization (43.26%). Among those patients who had been hospitalized, medical discharge was the most common outcome (87.99%), followed by death (11.47%). Further research is necessary in order to better understand the various aspects involved in the operation of an emergency department unit and to develop an institutional profile that encompasses other approaches, such as a better and more efficient health care delivery by health professionals.

Postoperative analgesia by non-specialists in pain

Beatriz Locks Bidese · Karinne Akemi Sakuma · Ayrton de Andrade Júnior +1 more

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Postoperative analgesia is often administered by the assistant physician non-specialist in pain management. This study aimed at evaluating the efficacy of immediate postoperative period analgesia with drugs prescribed by the assistant physician, non-specialist in pain.METHODS: This is a prospective, descriptive and observational study carried out by means of interviews with 186 patients operated in Hospital Santa Cruz. Postoperative pain was evaluated after 12 and 24 hours, in addition to drugs used and possible adverse effects.RESULTS: In the first evaluation, 12 hours after surgery, prevalence of pain was 59%, being 35% from moderate to severe. In the second evaluation, 24 hours after surgery, prevalence of pain was 22% being 12% from moderate to severe. Variables "type of surgery" and "drugs used" have not influenced pain intensity in the postoperative period of 12 hours. However, "type of surgery" has influenced pain intensity (p=0.02) in the postoperative period of 24 hours, being that patients submitted to orthopedic procedures were more likely to report pain (49.57%) as compared to other types of surgery. Opioids had significant association with the presence of adverse effects in the first evaluation (p=0.0001).CONCLUSION: Our data have shown that analgesia with drugs prescribed by physicians non-specialists in pain management was effective when compared to other studies not using specialized pain services. However, a multimodal approach to acute pain management, coordinated by a specialized service, could further decrease this prevalence.

Luany Ferreira Saldanha · Érika Barbosa Lagares · Patrícia Costa Fonseca +1 more

The Family Allowance Program (PBF) consists of a direct transfer of income benefiting families in poverty and extreme poverty in the country. Objective: this study aims to characterize the nutritional state of children less than seven years of age, beneficiaries of PBF and followed up by the Food and Nutrition Surveillance System (SISVAN) in the State of Minas Gerais (MG). Methods: the data were obtained from the SISVAN WEB platform from the database comprising information related to the Basic Health Units of MG for the years 2008 to 2011. The nutritional status of these children was evaluated by anthropometric indexes of weight-age, height-age, and body mass index-age (BMI/age). Results: the number of children in the age group from zero to seven years, benefited in the State of Minas Gerais, accounted for 10.5% of the number of total residents in the State in the same age group in 2008; 13.7% in 2009; 19.8% in 2010; and 18.6% in 2011. The most prevalent disturbance of nutritional status among users was excessive weight (average of 26.5% according to the BMI/age indicator); this status became more prevalent over the years whereas low weight and short stature declined in the age range. Conclusions: the beneficiaries of PBF showed reduced incidence of low birth weight and increased inciNutritional status of children who are recipients of the Family Allowance Program followed up by the Food and Nutrition Surveillance System in the State of Minas Gerais Luany Ferreira Saldanha1, Érika Barbosa Lagares1, Patrícia Costa Fonseca2, Lucilene Rezende Anastácio3 1 Acadêmica do Curso de Nutrição da Universidade de Itaúna. Evaluation of Quality of Dehydrated Onion (Allium cepa l.) Submitted to Different Methods

Érika Fernanda Rezendes Tada · Wellington Mamoro Umeda · Mauro Narciso de Melo Sobrinho +2 more

The processes of lyophilization and osmotic dehydration consist in the removal of water by freezing, followed by sublimation and mass transfer through osmosis, respectively. The standard sample was treated with convective drying oven for 300 minutes. Samples pretreated by osmotic dehydration were immersed in solutions of 5, 10 and 15 g / 100 g NaCl (w / w) and withdrawn every 30 minutes for the quantification of the loss of water for 5 hours and subjected to conventional drying in an oven at 70oC. The treated samples by lyophilization were processed for seven hours. By using osmotic solution of 5 g / 100 g NaCl for 300 minutes, there was loss of water at 14.54% which was obtained only at 230 minutes and 125 minutes for immersion in concentrations of 10 to 15 g / 100 g respectively. The end of the process with conventional oven drying loss was obtained with loss of water at 88,82%. The lyophilized sample lost 89,38% of water by weight of the sample. There were no significant differences regarding the removal of water in both processes. Sensory and visually, the osmotically treated samples become viable for commercialization, unlike the lyophilized sample, which showed dark coloration.
