Equalization versus Normalization: Facebook and the 2013 Israeli Elections

Tal Samuel-Azran · Moran Yarchi · Gadi Wolfsfeld

The question of whether social media grant challengers a fair opportunity to compete with incumbents, thus promoting equalization rather than normalization, is a key issue in studies of the web’s contribution to democratic systems. To contribute to the current debate, whose evidence so far strongly supports the normalization hypothesis, we examined the ability of the five leading political candidates in Israel popularity to promote engagement to their messages on social media by measuring Likes and Shares on their Facebook posts during the 2013 election campaign. Surprisingly, we found that first-time candidate, Naftali Bennett, achieved statistically similar engagement levels as achieved by PM Netanyahu, measured by the two Facebook measures mentioned above, and attracted dramatically more Likes than Netanyahu during the campaign. Similarly, first-time contender Yair Lapid’s messages promoted equal levels of engagement as did the messages of opposition leader Shelly Yachimovich. The study indicates the ability of challengers to generate similar engagement levels as incumbents through social media campaigns, an encouraging result that illustrates the democratizing potential of social media

Dávid Kaposi: Violence and Understanding in Gaza. The British Broadsheet's Coverage of the War. Palgrave Macmillan, 2014, p.220

László Csicsmann

“War is the continuation of politics by other means” – a proverb held by the military strategist, Clausewitz. This sentence is highly relevant in our understanding of the IsraeliPalestinian conflict which has had its own life-cycle since the beginning: when negotiations collapse a military phase begins. In the year 2014 the region saw more violence than diplomatic negotiations to solve the long-lasting conflict. The failure of the significant efforts of John Kerry to achieve a final status agreement for the West Bank and Gaza Strip until the spring of 2014 forced both Israelis and Palestinians to increasingly influence the international audience to support their truth. On the one side the renewed conflict in Gaza in the summer of 2014 prompted the Palestinian Authority to portray Israel as an oppressor, which breached the basic tenets of international humanitarian and war law. On the other side the Netanyahu government argued with using the right of self-defense in Gaza against a terrorist group, Hamas.

Economic miracles: Valuable economic lessons for developing nations

Alexander Maune

This article, a literature review of Israel`s economic miracles, examines the secrets behind the transformation of Israel, a Start-up Nation slightly smaller than New Jersey or Wales born in 1948 with a population of around seven million, to become an Innovation Nation with more companies listed on the National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations (NASDAQ) outside the United States of America. The article further examines the unique conditions existing in Israel which are luring technology companies and global investors. On the whole, it was established that Israel has managed to achieve economic development through its innovativeness that has come as a result of many factors some of which are discussed in this article. The author broadens the context of his conclusions by taking into consideration some of the concluding remarks by Israel `s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu`s 2014, Davos World Economic Forum address. This article will go a long way in influencing government policy implementation. This article has therefore business and academic value.

Interpersonal Meaning in Netanyahu’s Speech

Arif Firmansah

This study investigates how the interpersonal meaning is realized in the speech of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. This study aimed to uncover (1) the mood structure which realized in Netanyahu‘s speech of Iran and Palestine and (2) To what extent the difference in field determine the interpersonal metafunction of the speaker. This study is largely qualitative but in order to answer those research questions, this study will be assisted by some descriptive quantification to observe the trend in the interpersonal meaning of the speaker. It applies Hallidayan theory of Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG) in analyzing the research data. The data were taken from the websites which are readily accessible to the public. Two different transcribed speeches are discovered to extract the data which are needed to investigate the interpersonal meaning. Subject, Finite and Modality are the main tools to realize the interpersonal meaning of Netanyahu in his speech. It can be realized by discovering the use of those parts in his speech in different issue and occasion. It is found that Netanyahu‘s interpersonal meaning is realized through the placement of Subject and the utilization of Finite, Modality and Mood Adjuncts. It is also found that the differences of the field influence the interpersonal meaning of the speaker through the comparison of subject and finite. The findings in this present study are expected to be useful for some purposes in the future. Keywords: Interpersonal meaning, mood, modality.

Uneasy Fate of the Baron Ginzburg Collection

A. N. Artizov · Petr V. Stegniy

The article describes the history of appearance of the Baron Ginzburg Collection in the holdings of the Russian State Library. This Collection of Jewish and Arabic books and manuscripts of Baron Ginzburg is considered to be one of the treasures of the Russian State Library. The manuscript part of the Collection consists of 1913 units of the 14th - 19th centuries. In 2010 the Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu during his official visit to the Russian Federation raised the issue of transfer of the Ginzburg Collection to Israel “as a reciprocal gesture of good will” (the building of St. Sergius Metochion in Jerusalem was returned to the Russian Federation at the end of 2008). The search of documents relating to the fate of the Baron Ginzburg Collection in Russia held in the Russian archives produced unexpected results. After the First World War the Society of Friends of the Jewish National and University Library in Jerusalem (JNUL), created in London, got interested in the Ginzburg Collection. At the beginning of the 1920s representatives of JNUL claimed that Baronesse M. Ginzburg had been paid in advance and there had been drawn the act of purchase and sale of the Collection. However, they did not submit any documents which could confirm the version of sale of the Collection. By that time books and manuscripts were nationalized as scientific treasures and got held at the Rumyantsev Museum. The Museum leadership and Soviet Jewish community objected the idea of transfer of the Collection. Director of JNUL G. Leve appealed to V. I. Lenin, to A. Lunacharsky, the People’s Commissar of Education, and to other leaders of the Soviet Russia to solve the matter concerning the transfer of the Collection to Jerusalem. The request was supported by the famous scientist Albert Einstein. His letters to A. Lunacharsky are published for the first time.

PALESTINA DAN ISRAEL: Sejarah, Konflik dan Masa Depan

Misri A. Muchsin

Abstract: Palestine and Israel: History, Conflict and the Future. At the beginning Palestine was a part of Daulah Islamiyah under the Turki Usmani, but because this area was dominated by England in 1917, then about 48 percent of it was annexed by Jews, Palestine with the Muslim majority became not independent. This writing aims at exploring the struggle Muslim-Palestine toward Jews-Israel. For this purpose, the use of historical analysis and library research approaches in collecting data were used. The findings from this research are that Zionist Israel dominated Palestine because of being supported by its main allies: America, English and France while Palestine struggle alone because the surrounding Islamic countries had ever wanted to help in 1968 but they were lost in a six-day war. Therefore, Egypt, Syria and Jordan and Palestine released a part of their area. Lately Palestine becomes worse and if the Jews constitution proposed by Benyamin Netayahu to the Israel Parliament, Palestine and Arab Islam will be strongly insisted. Causes and Consequences of Western Extreme Negativism against Islam – Will Such Negativism Ever End? How? Why or Why Not?

Ghyasuddin Ahmed

Human bad manners of blame games, corruptions, crimes, deceptions, dislikes, greed, hate and turns and twists divide people and create most problems in the society. Since the beginning of industrialization human bad manners have increased many folds in recent years and perhaps reached the highest level resulting in the demise of Soviet communism in early 1990s and the free market economy or capitalism in 2008. After communism Islam became the undeclared enemy of the West that led to the tragic events of terrorism on September 11, 2001. No doubt such heinous acts are absolutely unacceptable and unjust, these gave the few most influential and powerful people in the West to demonize Islam and dehumanize the Muslims for their vested interests. These are the tiny ‘invisible’ interest groups of who come from different sectors of the society and they always benefit from societal chaos, conflicts, confusions and even wars. Justifiably the West went to war to punish and eliminate the terrorists ignoring totally the other side of story that made Muslim world hostile with the West – the Israeli and Palestinian conflict. This is the major cause of Muslim dissatisfaction around the world. To show their anger and dissatisfaction with the USA we saw people dancing and showing their happiness and joy on the streets in the Middle East immediately after destruction of the Twin Towers after the 911 attacks! The truth on Muslim anger was best enumerated by the Pew Research Centers and in a few interviews to the media by a top ranking ex-CIA agent, Michael Scheuer who was assigned to monitor and track bin Laden. In one interview he says, “We have yet to find a politician who is willing to tell the American people the truth” on the causes that divide the Muslims and the West. Instead of seriously trying to resolve the differences between the Muslims and the West, those tiny but most powerful interest groups are heavily engaged – more openly in slandering and smearing Islam and have launched propagandas 24/7 to destroy any good images and names that Islam ever had. This paper discusses the causes and consequences of the prevalence of extreme negativism against Islam in the West through a theory that he calls the Residual Rules. Two systemic models have also been developed to show the various linkages that led to such extreme negativism against Islam. President Clinton’s recent remark on the Middle East Conflict that Netanyahu killed the peace process and a large section of evangelical US Congressmen are making it impossible to end the conflict. The paper also raised many important issues and suggested few measures to improve relationships between the Muslims and the West. IIUC Studies Vol.9 December 2012: 161-186

SECURITIZATION OF NUCLEAR TECHNOLOGIES – THE IRANIAN NUCLEAR PROGRAM

Robert Siudak
