Integrating Form and Meaning in L2 Pronunciation Instruction

Talia Isaacs

One of the central challenges of ESL teaching is striking the right balance between form and meaning. In pronunciation pedagogy, this challenge is compounded because repetitive practice, which has been shown to enhance phonological acquisition and promote fluency, is widely viewed as being incompatible with communicative principles. This article provides a brief historical background for modern pronunciation pedagogy (from World War II to the present) as part of a backdrop for understanding the current disjuncture between pronunciation and communicative language teaching. A discussion on form-focused instruction, its applicability for pronunciation pedagogy, and challenges in implementation follows with reference to a recent article that presents evidence for the appropriateness of a communicative instructional framework for teaching L2 pronunciation (Trofimovich & Gatbonton, 2006). Finally, a communicative activity that encourages repetitive practice while integrating pronunciation with other components of language use is proposed.

Factors Influencing Social Activism among Campus: Youth in Sri Lanka

Shantha Abeysinghe · Sharifah Md Nor · Azimi Hamzah

Youths are constantly searching for a social identity and citizenry to express their inner concerns, and realize their national development. Within this context, this study identifies social activism as a means for building youths’ identity and citizenry. Numerous studies have indicated that the search for identity and citizenry is greatly influenced by both contextual and demographic factors. This paper aims to discuss the findings of a study pertaining to the contextual and demographic variables that influence social activism among campus youths in Sri Lanka. Corning’s measures of Social Activism Orientation were adapted for this study to measure social activism. The findings of this study suggest that youths, irrespective of rural and urban, coming from low income or high income households, belonging to different fields of studies or have parents with different levels of engagement in political activities, have equal levels of engagement in social activism in college campuses. However, significant differences were indicated between youths’ gender, war and non-war location context, and if their campuses are long established or newly established universities. The impact of universal free education policy is discussed with special reference to youth empowerment. Existing constrains and the lack of a youth - centered development approach, together with existing institutional socio political culture on campus are also discussed.

Treatment of Dissociation With EMDR When War Interrupts the Process The Integration of EMDR With E-Mail Therapy

Alan Cohen

This article describes the integration of e-mail correspondence with EMDR treatment for a woman with a fear of driving and a diagnosis of dissociative disorder, not otherwise specified (DDNOS). When the client first presented for treatment, her diagnosis was unrecognized, and treatment showed limited success. With recognition of the DDNOS diagnosis, the treatment contract was renegotiated, with the focus of therapy shifting to addressing her dissociative experiences. Therapeutic progress was being made when the course of the treatment was interrupted by war in the north of Israel, and regular meetings became impossible. Communication was maintained by e-mail correspondence. When face-to-face sessions recommenced, the e-mail therapy continued because writing had become a powerful therapeutic tool. Therapy concluded with the successful treatment of both the dissociative disorder and the fear of driving. Cautions regarding the use of e-mail therapy are provided.

Organochlorine Contaminants in Fishes from Coastal Waters West of Amukta Pass, Aleutian Islands, Alaska, USA

Miles A. Keith · Ricca Mark A. · Anthony Robert G. +1 more

Organochlorines were examined in liver and stable isotopes in muscle of fishes from the western Aleutian Islands, Alaska, in relation to islands or locations affected by military occupation. Pacific cod (Gadus macrocephalus) , Pacific halibut (Hippoglossus stenolepis) , and rock greenling (Hexagrammos lagocephalus) were collected from nearshore waters at contemporary (decommissioned) and historical (World War II) military locations, as well as at reference locations. Total (Σ) polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) dominated the suite of organochlorine groups (ΣDDTs, Σchlordane cyclodienes, Σother cyclodienes, and Σchlorinated benzenes and cyclohexanes) detected in fishes at all locations, followed by ΣDDTs and Σchlordanes; dichlorodiphenyldi‐chloroethylene ( p , p ′DDE) composed 52 to 66% of ΣDDTs by species. Organochlorine concentrations were higher or similar in cod compared to halibut and lowest in greenling; they were among the highest for fishes in Arctic or near Arctic waters. Organochlorine group concentrations varied among species and locations, but ΣPCB concentrations in all species were consistently higher at military locations than at reference locations. Moreover, all organochlorine group concentrations were higher in halibut from military locations than those from reference locations. A wide range of molecular weight organochlorines was detected at all locations, which implied regional or long‐range transport and deposition, as well as local point‐source contamination. Furthermore, a preponderance of higher‐chlorinated PCB congeners in fishes from contemporary military islands implied recent exposure. Concentrations in all organochlorine groups increased with δ 15 N enrichment in fishes, and analyses of residual variation provided further evidence of different sources of ΣPCBs and p , p ′DDE among species and locations.
