A sociology of trauma : violence and self identity

Justin Allen Snyder

A Sociology of Trauma This project relates the experience of violence to self-identity. It involves a systematic content analysis of memoirs published on rape, terrorism, genocide, and war. The content analysis provided a complex typology of traumatic stressors that is general to the instances of violence considered. The typology is a style of formal sociology comparable to what has been termed social pattern analysis (Zerubavel 2007). The identified stressors are as follows: the symbolic and cognitive expansion of violence, the loss of self-propriety during violent physical exchanges, the frustration of mundane choices and routines, and the blurring of moral and cognitive boundaries. A theoretical description was fit to the empirical findings. The typology illustrates that more happens in the process of violence than just direct physical harm. I employ the concepts of reflexivity and authenticity to describe the traumatic meaning of these events. Reflexivity and authenticity are two interrelated concepts used to capture aspects of contemporary Western self-identity. During violence, reflexivity and authenticity appear impossible; the stressors undermine an individual's basic confidence in his or her self-concept. As a consequence, individuals experience a comprehensive mortification of the self. Symptoms of posttraumatic disorder (PTSD) result from this experience of severe humiliation. The Borborema pegmatite Province, NE-Brazil revisited

Hartmut Beurlen · Sandra de Brito Barreto · R. Martin +3 more

The Borborema Pegmatite Province (BPP) in Northeastern Brazil was known since World War I, when it was exploited for mica. At the end of World War II it became famous as one of the world’s most important producers of Ta-ore and of beautiful specimens of exotic minerals. Recently it became an important supplier of raw materials for the Brazilian ceramics industry. Its most famous product nowadays is the turquoise blue copper bearing “Paraiba Tourmaline”. In spite of this importance, very few systematic geological studies were performed about the BPP in the last fty years and several important questions remain unsolved or were never addressed, like the classi cation of the pegmatites based on geochemical techniques and paragenetical properties, comparison with other pegmatite elds, their regional zoned distribution and the identi cation of the granitic (or other) source. The present review will focus these points based on previous literature and geochemical and geochronological data and eld observations, obtained in the last two decades, mainly as introduction on the knowledge on the BPP for the post-symposium eld trip participants.

Déficit, crédito y deuda pública. Córdoba, Argentina, 1920-1940

Félix Converso

The intention of this article is to study the evolution of the finances of the province of Cordoba, circumscribing it to the analysis of the internal and external credit. Besides, to establish the dimension of the resulting national debt and its service, without losing of sight the use of the received capitals and the emitted internal titles. Including an inter-war period of importance in the Argentine economy, which simultaneously was shocked by the effects of two major crises, conventionally placed in 1914 and 1930.

'Ambtenaren in dienst van de vijand'. De bestraffing van het activisme in de Belgische rijksadministratie (1918-1921)

Stephanie Wilde · Frederik Verleden

Stijn De Wilde en Frederik Verleden ‘Civil Servants working for the Enemy’. The Repression of ‘ Activism’ in the Belgian Civil Service (1918-1921) During the First World War, radical Flemish nationalists or ‘activists’ collaborated with Germany in order to obtain Flemish self-rule or even independence. In the aftermath of the war, the Belgian government prosecuted those who participated in the German Flamenpolitik. The repression of activism has led to many controversies, as the Flemish Movement considered it a harsh, anti-Flemish purge. Little is known about the repression of activists in the Belgian civil service. Yet, the scission of the Belgian civil service in a separate Flemish and Walloon branch was the most disputed measure of the German authorities and many civil servants were involved in one way or another. As it turned out, the administrative post-war purge was much larger than the criminal prosecution of activism. However, it would be a biased judgment to dismiss the administrative purge as an anti-Flemish operation as Walloon civil servants who had collaborated were also prosecuted. The repression of activism’was, however, burdened by the deficiencies typical of transitional justice: inadequate legal or administrative procedures, political interference, and infringements of the principles of a fair trial.
