Background: Petroselinum crispum is a common vegetable or spice in Egypt and worldwide. It possess many pharmacological and medicinal properties. Aims: In the current research, the total phenolic and flavonoid contents as well as the antioxidant activities of P. crispum methanolic extract and its fractions were evaluated. Methodology: The total phenolic content was estimated by Folin-Ciocalteu method and total flavonoid content was tested by aluminum chloride assay. The antioxidant activity was evaluated by 1, 1diphenyl-2picryl hydrazyl radical (DPPH) assay, 2, 2ʹ-azinobis (3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6sulphonic acid) assay (ABTS), and total antioxidant capacity assay. Results: The ethyl acetate fraction derived from the methanolic extract exhibited the highest total phenolic content (121.95±2.15, mg GAE/ g extract) and total flavonoids content (106.45±2.18 mg rutin equivalent / g extract). Furthermore, the ethyl acetate fraction demonstrated the more potent Original Research Article El-Sayed et al.; JALSI, 19(2): 1-7, 2018; Article no.JALSI.45113 2 DPPH activity (Sc50= 44.51±2.06 μg/ml), ABTS activity (69.82±3.07 mmTrolox ® eq. / 10 g extract) and total antioxidant capacity (166.83±1.96 mg of ascorbic acid eq. / g extract). Conclusion: The results of the current study showed that P. crispum contains an important amount of phenolic compounds and higher antioxidant activities, which serve as a good source of food ingredients and dietary supplements.

Genetic Parameter Estimates for Milk Yield, Udder and Body Conformation Traits of Jersey Cattle in the New Derived Guinea Savannah Zone of Nigeria

R. O. Okeke · Suleiman Ibrahim Onotu · Olaolu T. Olufemi +4 more

Despite the huge potential of utilising Jersey cattle as diary animals in the tropical countries, the genetic basis of the relationship between milk yield and conformation traits has been scarcely described in the literature especially in West Africa. This trial therefore set a layout to estimate the additive genetic correlations, heritabilities and repeatabilities of milk, udder and body conformation Original Research Article Okeke et al.; JEAI, 29(1): 1-5, 2019; Article no.JEAI.42044 2 traits for Jersey cattle in the Derived Guinea Savannah zone of Nigeria. Our study used a total of 4200 lactation records for milk yield and conformation traits of Jersey cows. The milk and conformation traits data was analysed by fitting and solving a multiple trait animal model solutions using average information restricted maximum likelihood algorithm. Traits with moderate to high heritabilities and repeatabilities estimates were milk yield (0.35; 0.53), body condition score (0.25; 0.31), chest ligament (0.72; 0.75), chest width (0.23; 0.28), body depth (0.61; 0.65), udder circumference (0.44; 0.45), rear udder height (0.38; 0.41), rear udder width (0.52; 0.63) and teat length (0.34; 0.40), respectively. Milk yield had the highest additive genetic correlation with body weight (0.86). We concluded that the heritability was high enough to consider the traits in selection programs. The high additive genetic correlation between milk yield and bodyweight in the derived Guinea Savannah Zone of Nigeria validates the need to considering bodyweight in selection programs geared towards improvement of milk yield of Jersey cattle born in Nigeria.

Estimated Power Output from a Simplified Pico Hydropower System

Alex Okibe Edeoja · Joshua Sunday Ibrahim · Lawrence Ochonu

Based on the results of no-load tests carried out on a simplified Pico hydropower system currently undergoing development, on-load tests were carried out. A turbine of runner diameter 0.40 m, penstock diameters in the range 0.0381 ≤ ≤ 0.0508 and nozzle area ratios in the range 0.2 ≤ / ≤ 0.6 were used for the on-load tests. A 2.5 kW alternator was linked to the turbine using a v-belt drive on pulleys of ratio 6:1. The effective vertical height from the outlet of the reservoir to the plane of the turbine shaft was 6.95 m. A 0.74 kW electric pump was used to recycle the water to the overhead reservoir. The rotational speeds of the turbine and alternator shafts, the volume of water displaced and voltage were measured for each penstock diameter and nozzle area ratio. The measured data were used to compute the system volumetric flow rate and to estimate the power output based on the alternator manufacturer’s specifications. The turbine efficiency was also computed. The system developed a maximum voltage of 224 V with = 0.0508 and a minimum voltage of 111 V with = 0.0381 and ⁄ = 0.6. The corresponding estimated power outputs Original Research Article Edeoja et al.; JENRR, 1(1): 1-16, 2018; Article no.JENRR.41392 2 were 2.125 kW and 1.545 kW respectively. The mean maximum and minimum efficiencies based on the estimated power output were 0.85 and 0.618 respectively. The overall results indicate very good potential for the system as a clean, decentralized small power generation unit that gives control to the user.

An Investigation of Electricity Power Fluctuations and Performance of Small and Medium Enterprises in Dekina, Kogi State

Yakubu Zakariya Nurudeen · Akeem Tunde Nafiu · Abubakar Ibrahim Jibo

SME owners face the problem of unreliable power supply in their routine business operations in Dekina Local government of Kogi State. Capacity installed is not utilized and this affects their performances and economic contribution. This study investigates the influence of unreliable power supply on economic contribution and performance of SMEs in Dekina Local government of Kogi State. The study adopted a survey research design. Finding shows that unreliable electricity power supply has caused increased operation cost and untimely death for SMEs in Dekina Local government of Kogi State. Furthermore, finding shows that significant differences exist between SMEs that utilized installed capacity and those that do not utilized installed capacity in terms of operation cost, productivity, competitive edge, market share, contribution to poverty and unemployment reduction. It was concluded that SMEs that utilized installed capacity witness reduced operation cost, increased productivity, higher competitive edge, larger market share, a Original Research Article Nurudeen et al.; JENRR, 1(3): 1-10, 2018; Article no.JENRR.43177 2 greater contribution to poverty and unemployment reduction. The study, therefore, recommends that the government and other economic stakeholders should device alternative reliable power supply to facilitate the economic contribution and performance of SMEs in Dekina Local government of Kogi State.
