The present paper attempts to provide a critical evaluation of the most prominent pedagogical models that have dealt with the language of the second language (L2) learner starting from the second half of the 20th century. The three most influential approaches in the domain are investigated in this study: contrastive analysis (CA), error analysis (EA), and interlanguage (IL). Each of these models is tackled in terms of its beginning, psychological background, essential tenets, mechanism, and its pedagogical value. Prominently, this work is aimed at teasing apart the confusion that surrounds the fields of acquiring second/foreign language. It also endeavors to clear out the overlapping of both terminology and concept that cloud these areas. Focus is placed on IL owing to the dominant share of attention it has received from researchers and applied linguists who have found many of their questions answered and many information-gaps filled in with this theory. This review paper is an extract of an in-progress PhD dissertation on interlanguage pragmatics of Kurdish university EFL learners, which is an applied study addressing both the pragmalinguistic and sociopragmatic knowledge of the students.

This paper explores the possibilities of using mobile technology in the teaching and learning of the English language. A sample of 50 Sandwich students/teachers of the English language was drawn through a multi-stage sampling technique. The instrument used to collect data for this study is a ten-item questionnaire on integrating mobile phones in the teaching and learning of English. This instrument was validated by two language experts in the Department of English and Literary Studies, University of Nigeria, Nsukka. Data collected for this study were analysed using the percentage system represented in line charts. The results showed that mobile phones are instrumental in teaching and learning of English in classrooms. The paper concludes that M-learning promotes cooperative and collaborative learning through the enhancement of learner’s use of authentic English language that would make it possible for them to construct their own knowledge. Based on the results of this research, the researchers recommend that mobile phone can be integrated in teaching and learning of English as a Second Language.

Over the past few decades, there have been tremendous increase in technology advancement and the significance of this in the field of education cannot be overemphasised. The adoption and use of E-learning in studying EFL, in particular, is one such areas that has experienced such fast-paced development for some time now. As a result, the government all over the world are committing a lot of resources to keep up with this technology advancement. In this light, the government of Saudi Arabia through its Ministry of Education has recently made commitment, both as the practical and policy levels, with the hope to also benefit from using E-learning in studying EFL in Saudi Schools. However, little is known about the perception of students and teachers regarding the role of E-learning is studying EFL in the Saudi context. In an attempt to contribute to this research base, this paper draws on an empirical investigation using group interviews with students and teachers in order to gain insight into their perception about the role of E-learning in studying EFL in Saudi Arabia. The findings are presented and discussed in four thematic areas: promoting key learning skills, independent learning, flexible learning and interactive learning. The paper also highlights the limitations of the research and concludes by making a number of recommendations.

Metaphor is an important figure of speech copiously deployed in political discourse. In this study, we adopted the framework of Charteris-Black’s (2004) Critical Metaphor Analysis (CMA) which derives from Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA).This framework is interested in exploring the implicit intentions of language users, the ideological configurations and the hidden power relations within socio-political and cultural contexts. It captures the ideological and conceptual nature of metaphor, and transmits truth alive into the hearts of the people by passion. The thrust of this study is the identification, analysis and interpretation of the ideological and conceptual metaphors in the speeches we studied that create a particular linguistic style, conceptualize the speakers’ experiences and transmit their ideologies for rhetoric and argumentation purposes. The corpus of this study is limited to the political speeches of Brigadier Sani Abacha in 1984 and 1993, General Ibrahim Babangida in 1985 and 1993, M.K.O. Abiola in 1993 and 1994, and Goodluck Ebele Jonathan in 2013. The study reveals that the speakers use metaphors as tools to enact power and wield influence on their audience. There is further the use of metaphors for the purpose of argumentation thereby promoting self-ideologies and power asymmetric. Furthermore, the study shows that the speakers in the speeches we analysed use metaphors as a strategy to identify with the people so as to create a bond between them. Finally, our speakers use metaphors to manipulate their audience both mentally and conceptually, polarize between them and the conceived enemies, and dominate their audience; and conceal and conceptualize experience in order to reframe realities to suit their interests.

There is a strong belief among language teachers that intensive exposure to language alone can lead to acquisition. The present study is a qualitative- quantitative research design that used a quasi-experimental design to compare between the effectiveness of intensive exposure to language versus phonological awareness explicit instruction on adult Arab EFL learners’ EFL reading literacy in a Saudi university context. The study is also concerned with Saudi adult learners’ attitudes towards phonological awareness instruction. Participants (N=89) were all male students enrolled in an intensive EFL undergraduate program, where they were required to pass an intensive EFL course. Sample were randomly divided into a treatment group (N=47), who received phonological awareness treatment, and a control group (N=42) who were exposed to language intensively. Posttest findings confirmed the significant effect of phonological awareness instruction on the sample’s EFL literacy. Moreover, positive attitudes towards the program were detected in the interviews held at the end of treatment. Therefore, the study recommended introducing phonological awareness instruction to develop Arab learners’ EFL literacy.

BACKGROUND: Hypoalbuminemia is the most powerful predictor of mortality in end-stage renal disease on hemodialysis. Metabolic acidosis induces net negative nitrogen and total body protein balance. Some patients undergoing maintenance dialysis have low plasma bicarbonate levels due to inadequate dialysis. We aimed to evaluate the role of metabolic acidosis on serum albumin concentration in patients with end stage renal disease on hemodialysis, and to determine differences of serum bicarbonate level before and after hemodialysis in actual situation. METHODS: This cross sectional comparative study was conducted in the Iraqi Center for Hemodialysis/ Baghdad Teaching Hospital from June to December 2015. It included 100 subjects with end stage renal disease on hemodialysis. They were divided equally into cases with low albumin and comparison group with normal albumin level. Serum bicarbonate and the Kt/V were measured for all subjects before, after, and before next hemodialysis session to show the adequacy of dialysis.RESULTS: There was a significant association between low bicarbonate and low albumin level in hemodialysis patient and between numbers and duration of dialysis session with albumin. Low Kt/V was significantly associated with hypoalbuminemia. There was no statistically significant association between age and gender with hypoalbuminemia.CONCLUSION: This study shows that patients with metabolic acidosis had a lower serum albumin concentration and there was a significant correlation between numbers, duration and adequacy of hemodialysis sessions and albumin level. We recommend to increase the numbers of dialysis centers in Iraq and adjust the bicarbonate doses in dialysate according to patient’s bicarbonate levels.

According to the constructivist approach in mathematics education, knowledge is actively created or invented by the students, not passively received from the teacher or the environment. In this regard, learning environments should be designed so that students have to use effectively their “own” knowledge and thus students achieve desired information. Through the micro-worlds, the experimental environments where students make observations, researches and predictions shall be created. In the micro-worlds formed by means of Cabri Geometry, a dynamic geometry sketchbook, users can draw and explore many geometric shapes. Besides, the manipulation and displacement of objects can be easily done via this software. In this study, we emphasize on that property of Cabri Geometry. Four pre-service elementary mathematics teachers among thirty ones which have taken a course on the mathematics teaching in the dynamic mathematics software environment have voluntarily participated to the study. The participants have randomly divided into two groups. Each group has worked on computer together and is asked to draw two dimensions shapes like triangles, parallelogram, rectangle etc. without using related “tool of Cabri”. The collection of the data of this study involves interviews during their work, screen record of the computer and tape record of conversation among pair of participants. The results of study reveal that more professionally the participants use the Cabri Geometry more different strategies they use to construct asked shapes and participants have always questioned themselves about their pre-knowledge of the dynamically constructed shape.

This paper examines students’ perception of the impact of lecturers’ ranks on their performance across departments in the Faculty of Mathematical Sciences (FMS) of the University for Development Studies (UDS), Navrongo Campus. The study used a self-designed structured questionnaire administered to 160 respondents (students) of the Faculty. All the 160 questionnaires were retrieved, which represents 100% response rate. The data were analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 25.0 for windows. Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) results showed that (at P<0.05) Senior Lecturers received higher ratings followed by Lecturers and then Assistant Lecturers, indicating that the ranks of Teaching Staff significantly influenced their performance across the various departments of the Faculty. Recommendations and implications for management of Higher Institutions of Learning (HIL) have been discussed. The paper contributes to the literature in the area of supervision and evaluation of the performance of teaching staff in the HIL context.

The main objective of this paper is to analyze equilibrium and dynamic causality relationships between monetary policy tools and economic growth in Jordan for the period (1990-2017). For this purpose, it considers the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) and vector error correction (VEC) models estimations. The results of ARDL approach show that monetary policy variables (i.e., real interest rate and money supply) have positive impact on economic growth in long-run and short-run except inflation rate. In addition, the results of VECM indicate bidirectional causal relationships between economic growth and monetary policy variables in long-run and short-run.

The purpose of this study is to determine the factors affecting the intercultural sensitivity perception levels of Psychological Counseling and Guidance students. This study was conducted in Pamukkale University which is located in the western part of Turkey. Data were gathered from 524 freshmen, sophomore, junior and senior students who are studying in the Psychological Counseling and Guidance department. The study was designed as a survey research. As a data collection tool, “Intercultural Sensitivity Scale” which was developed by Chen and Strasto (2000) and adapted to Turkish language by Bulduk, Tosun, and Ardic (2011) was employed. In the analysis of the data, the t-test and the one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used. According to the findings of the study, it was determined that the more grade level rises, the more students’ intercultural sensitivity perception level increases. It was found that the intercultural sensitivity perception levels were higher for students who stated that their experiences during undergraduate studies affected their views on cultural differences positively and for those having lived with various cultures than other participants. It was also found that the factors affecting the intercultural sensitivity perception level of students who are studying in Psychological Counseling and Guidance department are such; grade level, experience in undergraduate level, the longest place of settlement, a situation of being with different cultures. When the situation of being with different cultures increases intercultural sensitivity is considered, making widespread of international and national student exchange programs such as ERASMUS and FARABI and arranging educational settings by giving place for interaction with various cultures might be suggested.
